Default CEL, does really matter??

hey guys, i always thought that if u had a check engine light on.. that meant ur ecu will make ur car run inefficiently.. like if your under 3000rpm u will waste gas inefficiently.. but wen u gun it the ecu goes into a safe mode or something and lets the car go all out... which makes the car perform top notch for that moment...

but my friend kept insisting that the cel doesnt matter at all.. i want to clarify this.. please i need expert facts.. thanks..

It depends on the why the CE light is on. You have to read the code. For example a code P0420 is a common code that will not affect the operation. But you don't know what it is until you get it read.

In general, a blinking or flashing CEL is more serious than a steady CEL.

Nope, but it is annoying, and the car would fail an OBD-2 type emissions test. I have heard of some people putting a piece of black tape over the light.

Other options are:

A resistor/capacitor fix
A treaded extension on the sensor fix
An erase after identifying fix
A battery ground disconnect plus brake pedal depress fix.

That would be the P0420 code.
