is there a way to read what my cel is

without having to get the code pulled with a reader or something? like using a jumper to make it flash to tell me what the code is?

I dont think so... autozone used to pull codes for free.

In the older cars there was a way to read the codes by having the light flash them out, however this option is not available on the '96-up OBDII Subarus. To read codes you must have a scanner.
Autozone does read codes for free but unfortunately they stopped doing it in CA, they do still provide this service in other states.
Check in your local forum for a nearby member with a scanner.
