Will a JDM ecu from a regular WRX in japan work on a US WRX? A regular japanese WRX ECU that is... from the non-STi, 240 or however much hp jdm wrx. Are there any real differences between the two engines that would prevent it from working?
Also what are the tuning options for JDM ECU. I know several people run EcuTek with it but has anyone had success with a UTEC on one? Searching through hundreds of threads with the words JDM and ECU in them didn't help much thanksedit: also are JDM ecu's emission friendly? I'm assuming they aren't ![]()

JDM wrx is 9.0 compression ratio and has the AVCS system. Also, the JDM ECU I believe has the fuel pump controller built into it. I also think that the JDM wrx ECU has a few different features that the US one doesnt. I dont think that would be a drop in deal at all. I could be wrong though.

Eight is correct in some respects. The JDM ECU has 9:1 compression so the timing is much lower than the USDM, plus it has AVCS, so that will really be worthless on your USDM.
Though the fuel controller is still seperate like the USDM version. Though if you wanted to drop it in you could, though there is really no reason to as you don't benefit in anyway. in fact you will probably lose power with it in there as it is based on 9:1 compression and AVCS. I can see how it being meant for higher CR would hurt but would it being set up for AVCS really harm performance much?
Thanks for the responses.. I guess I'll have to do some more research ![]() |

It should plug in and work, but like Skywalker said, you aren't going to see any benefit from it if that's what your after.
You can tune them with EcuTek but there is no point because you could tune the US ECU to do the same things. AVCS not being there is going to throw 2 codes for the AVCS cam sensors. The JDM ECUs support OBD2 so they will work for an OBD2 scan check at an emissions place. I wouldn't put one in my car as its tuned for different gas as well and may run more timing than what you should be running on pump gas, I know my JDM V8 ECU is like that. |
