Question 2k OB noob has questions

I just picked up my first ever Subaru, a 2000 OB Wagon. I have some basic qestions. It's a 2.5, is it a DOHC or SOHC? How can you tell? It's a 5 spd, is this trans. shared with any othe subie? How strong are the head gaskets? Is this an interference motor? Timing belt lifespan? What generation is the 2000? Thanks to all!!

I don't think the owner's manual will answer those questions.

-SOHC (Phase II 2.5 l)

-Your trans is used in all Legacies, not just Outbacks. Outback = Legacy for the most part, so most Legacy info applies to yours.

- Head gaskets? Search for WWP-99, they leak externally sometimes and SOA recommends a special magic pixie additive be put in your coolant to prevent this.

- Interference motor? Not sure. I don't like to guess.

- Timing belt? Check your recommended service chart.

- Generation? Third.

The search function on Nasioc is very good

A 2000 should be a SOHC engine. Scheduled time for timing belt is 105k miles.

Just did mine last week. Belt still looked good but wasn't willing to take chances. You will want to insp/replace the waterpump at same time. My OB had 111k miles on it had original WP and was showing signs of starting to leak. Should also give serious thought to replacing the front oil seal on the front of the oil pump. In place of paying close to $15 at the dealer for this part I went to bearing house and purchased the seal there for $5.50.

Don't believe the engine is an interfearence design. While doing the belt I do seem to remember turning one of the cams while crank was at TDC. Don't recall feeling any interfearence.

If you do plan on working on this yourself and you do do the timing belt, you might find the timing marks on the cam sprokets a little less than perfect. Mine were about a half tooth off and was told be a Subie mech. this was not uncommon.

Thanks to all; I've been studying the Legacy platform for several months so I had a general idea of what I was getting, and found a great deal on a 2000 Outback. I drove a 2000 Legacy L wagon, but I waited, and I'm glad that I did. I have about 30k to go for the timing belt, so it'll be a couple of years until I have to sweat it. Why is it funny that this 2.5 is SOHC? Is there something wrong with the SOHC?

Is there a tech section that has an article on timing belt replacement? I am helping my brother do a timing belt on his 2.5 outback with a 2.5 interference motor. We had everything lined up and tention on the belt and it keeps skipping. Since it is an interference motor how bad is the damage? He just had the heads done.
