Impreza GC8 Talk me out of Slipstream + 225/50/16 summer tires

I was originally going to simply get 205/55/16 ES100 on my stock RS 16x7 53"mm offset wheels and get some steelies for my Dunlop M3 in winter (right now I have the M3 on the stock wheels)

I started to think about getting Rota Slipstream instead. My reasonings were:
1) they are lighter (~13lb each)
2) they have +48 offset. This means I am 5mm further away from the strut and I am hoping this extra clearance will result in only rubbing the fender when I run 225/50/16 ES100 or Kumho MX
3) I gain 10mm of track width?
4) Pricing: A set of steelies will cost me like $100-$200? I can pick up a set of Slipstream for $500 (less if used). The price difference between 225/50/16 and 205/55/16 is very close.
5) NYC roads suck and 16" dont make my car stands out much in terms of "being suped up"
6) not looking for a 4-pot upgrade

Now I dont autocross (yet, I am gonna bring the wife to one of these to show her it is not racing and not dangerous )...I drive 90 miles a day so treadwear is important (I dunno the wear rating on the Kumho). It is 95% highway driving and there are a couple fun on/off ramps....

comments/suggestions (please keep in mind I am looking in the price range of slipstream and ES100)

I say go for it. I did. I have a set of slipstreams at home just waiting for warmer weather (and a set of 225/50-16 S03s). They are replacing 17' Subzeroes. The Slipstream combo is 1) as light as it gets 2) really, really strong. Although I have had no problems with the Subzeroes, I feel better with the Slipstreams. You can get them new for $450-500, a used set should go for <400. I use the OEM wheels for winter, Slipstreams for summer and my wife autox about 12+ times per season.
I am not a big fan of the ES-100s, i would go with the MX or even better the S03s (they are tougher and take more abuse than the mXs).

I'd talk you out of it....but it sounds like a great idea! I did the same thing....Dunlop M3s on my stock rims and plan on going the roughly the same route. 16x7 SSR Comps with 225/50R16 Bridgestone Re950s for the other three seasons.

I don't know much about the two tires you mentioned but I decided to go with an high performance "all season" over a strictly summer tire because of occasional freak weather we get in Montana, plus I do a fair amount of dirt road driving. Plus many of these "all seasons" are next to useless on anything more than a dusting of snow. I figure the extra 20mm in width will still give me a huge traction advantage over the stock 205/55Re92s and the extra treadwear rating of a slightly harder rubber is always welcome on the pocketbook.

For your price range you might also look at the Continental ContiExtremecontact Here's a link http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....ExtremeContact

balajc,

I run 225-50-16's for my 99RS on the stock rims... well, the tires are only used at the track as their R-compounds.....

I just finished a set of Kuhmo Victoracers and will be buying a set of Toyo RA-1 in 225-50-16....

I had 2 3mm spacers machined for the rears... it rubs a bit on the strut under very hard cornering but otherwise it's fine. The fronts are fine... and no rubbing.

For the suspension, I have KYB/AGX on stock springs....

A couple of things...

- The Slipstreams weigh 14.5 lbs in our offset according to Rota - 13lbs is what some retailers have stated but it is marketing not reality. It's still 2 lbs lighter than your stock RS wheels.
- The Kuhmo MX is a great tire, however the 225/50x16 size is one of the heaviest sizes - due to its weight capacity, I believe - and runs over 25lbs in the MX

In other words, you won't be saving weight in total but rater adding a couple of pounds per wheel due to the tires. However, the gains in contact patch width are well worth it in my opinion.

My last point - the 225/50x16 size will usually rub on GC8's like your '00 RS unless you roll the fenders or add some serious negative camber. The ET48 offset of the Slipstreams makes rubbing pretty much a sure thing.

I still think that you should go for it but it might be a more expensive proposition than you originally budgeted for.

good advices

I made the thread cuz I kinda wanted validation that 48+ offset and 225/50/16 will rub the fender ONLY at stock height (springs and struts)

Like Robin 2 said, at stock height he has 3mm spacer in the rear with 225 on his RS wheels. This means he has a 50 offset in the rear and tires rub a bit on the struts (KYB/AGX). Does anyone know which strut is wider (Stocks vs KYB)?
