Default domestic ej20 versus JDM ej20

hello,

i was wondering if anyone knew the major differences between a domestic wrx engine and a jdm one.... besides the obvious hp difference. im trying to decide which is more practical for a swap.

thanks

Nick

I have a 98 STI RA Conversion and I have stock everything except my Air Box and I have 221 horsepower at the wheels..My friends Stock 02 WRX only had 185 Horspower...with less RPM's to push...I like my JDM motor and most of the parts I can get from the Subie dealers here....Timing Belt is the same as a 98 2.5RS and I can use any EJ20T Clutch set up...It's all about how you want to do the install process...

I have a JDM STi V2 in my RS that is mostly stock (aftermarket JDM ecu) and I am putting down 244whp with a TD05H 16g. It feels real strong.

I'm thinking about JDM EJ20T engine into a 98/99 2.5RS... if these engines are put into our American cars....are any mechanics going to be able to work on them if needed?... and will they pass emissions? Would the smog parts off the 2.5 RS engine just bolt up to a JDM engine like that? Also will aftermarket upgrades say..for an 02 USDM WRX work on this engine? Yes i'm a noob

Like the people above have stated it depends on which jdm engine you get; there are several different version. The usdm one is just that , one engine and all the same unless you compare the sti and the regular wrx.
jdm is not legal to install, but most states never check
usdm one is since it's from a us car
jdm is mostly the same as the usdm wrx and can usually find parts
udsm one is for sure easy to get parts for

For the easiest swap with the least amount of headaches get the usdm. If you know somebody that speaks japanese or lives there you're in luck.

I wouldn't suggest a newbie doing or having an engine swap from a JDM platform... I would stick to the local ej20

Again I belive so, but the avcs might cause problems. And its only realy worth it if your motor is gone and this is cheep. Other wise you can pick up a sti motor for around $5k.

It should but you will have a few CELs.

Kingpin 5k used, rallispec 10k new, lachute 5k... this is for a ver7 or 8 older blocks will be cheeper. You can get then a lot cheeper... but I dont trust ebay or no name shops. Only the names that have been around for a while and are good to thier customers.
