OK, this really bugs me and I had to get it off my chest.
I went outside a minute ago to smoke a cig. There was a new Volvo C70 sitting outside my building. Now I happen to like the direction that Volvo is going with their cars, and I walked up to admire it. The owner walks up, gets in, and lowers the convertable top. So I talk to him.... Me: "That is a good looking car." Him: "Thank you." Me: "What sort of engine does it have? 5 cylinder turbo? 6? 4?" Him: "Well, I forget but it scoots!" I FORGET!?@?#!! Terrible! That REALLY bugs me! I mean, a car is going to be the second most expensive thing you buy (after a house, if you even buy a house) and you don't know something as BASIC as how many cylinders it has? UGH! I am done... Pathetic...just pathetic... D. Neil Crawford

But in your one observation, you most likely uncovered the dominant reasons that person owns the C70 'vert. Looks nice and 'scoots'. Obviously not an enthusiast...

They all have the 5cyl turbos. The C70 coupe was my first choice, just got too expensive so I went with my RS. *shrug*

I don't think I've ever met a Volvo driver who knew anything about their car. If they did know anything, they might know that Volvo's are the worst offenders of the "sending too much torque to the front tire syndrome".

Actually that award belongs to Saab, and they actually limit the engine output of the Viggen in 1st gear to minimize wheelspin and torque steer.

Doh! I've been found out!
What gave me away, Brucelee? Hey ColinL, I think you're right? But Volvo does come a very close second. |

You can't be mad at somebody just because they're ignorant. "Ignnorance is bliss", Right? Imagine if everyone knew what the RS was capable of?

I had someone tell me that the RS has 4 turbo's. I said, "and how did u come to that assumption." They said, "I saw the turbo's through the wheels." I said, "you mean the disc brakes?" She said, "no, the turbo's".
OK... (mental note: stay away from that one) |

HomerJay - I still know a lot about Volvos... Great cars, well at least they were when they were still RWD. The 700 series got flaky with the crappy 6cly engine, but their 4cyl's were always the most reliable thing in the world. I've proven it twice - you can empty a Volvo of all fluids and still drive it (don't ask).

Here's what I don't get, the C70 convertible has about 190 hp, while the coupe has either 236 or 246. A LOT more anyway, and the coupe is also pretty fast, 0-60 is about 6.7 if I remember. I can't possibly figure out why Volvo would "slow down" the convertible so much.

A guy here at work just bought a C70 coupe. Beautiful car, inside and out. Except...
The wheels. The alloy wheels look fine, but behind the spokes is a metal plate painted (???) black -- too make it difficult to see. I guess it's there to keep the wheels from getting dirty with brake dust. BUT, DAMN. U-G-L-Y and stupid. That much money for a car and for all I could tell the damn thing had drum brakes all the way around because I surely couldn't see any rotors. I guess I know why they do it. Ever notice that on a lot of really expensive cars that have been on the road for over 1 year the front wheels are dark from brake dust? Lazy way out... SteveS http://www.lagging.com |

Why have a go at people because thay don't know what their car is? To a lot of people, a car is simply a means of transport, like a bus or train. It makes no difference to them what size the engine is, or how many cylinders it has. Comfort, or running cost might be their main consideration, not performance, or cam profiles etc..
Each to their own, my dear boy. Geezer |

I concur with geezer. Seriously lets say some person comes up to you and ask you about your kitchen set and u just say err.... it makes good eggs. He/she might go to their kitchen bbs and rant on you. To each their own.

I only own one car, and I know a lot about it. The Volvo convertible owner may own 6 cars, and knows only a little about each!

Hey Steve, for your information ALL Volvo's going as far back as I can remember have had 4 wheel DISC brakes, it's a standard Volvo safety feature. I don't know what you thought you saw, but I can assure you that any Volvo, especially a brand new one, would NOT have drums anywhere, especially not all around.
My only beef with the C70 is the lack of hp in the convertible, and the lack of a manual transmission option on either. Ben |

Only reason I can think of for Volvo to detune the convertible is to reduce the amount of chassis flex introduced by a high-power engine in what is decidedly a less stiff body (in comparison to the coupe).
But then again, I find that hard to believe seeing as how Volvo's are some of the toughest bodied cars I know and I doubt TWR (Tom Walkinshaw Racing to the uninformed) would have put such a weak body shell on the C70. ![]() |

Those brake dust covers were probably put on by the owner...volvo brake pads are excellent, but with good braking power comes lots of dust. And the convertible WAS detuned, because it's a convertible and it is safer with less HP...no roll-overs and the like. Now for 2000 both the C70 coupe and cab come with an option of the LPT 190HP engine and the HPT 236 HP engine, and a 5-speed is optional as well...

Silent Ben ~~ I know the C70 has disc brakes all the way around. That wasn't my point. The point was how absolutely TERRIBLE those wheels look. I'll take a picture and upload it so everyone can see. I don't know if this is an optional item, but I really doubt the owner put them on himself. The car was brand spanking new, the day after he picked it up, and it had them on. Weird.
