Thumbs up Impreza WRC Trivia! Win a WRC Sticker Set!!!

Seems like a good time to have another trivia question since our guys are currently doing splendid in Argintina and everyone is in a Rally mood

Here it is. Since the Impreza began in the World Rally Championship, it had always been known for it's practically bullet-proof reliability. However, Prodrive ran into a nightmare when cam pulley problems prompted unscheduled and resource-sapping tests that proved to be of little help. These problems no doubt tainted Subaru's reputation for having one of the most reliable cars in the WRC and also played a major part in allowing the Mitsubishi Lancer to steal much of the lime-light away from the Impreza. The DNFs that Colin McRae accumulated because of these problems played a very big role in costing him his second World Rally crown. What year did these problems take place and what was the first rally in that season to see these problems arise?

Very True Nick, very true! I guess that wasn't the best example of a hint.

OK, here is another hint. Prodrive always knew there was the possiblity of a problem with the boxer's "rotational harmonics" as far back as 89', however the problem never made itself known in rallys or even testing. Then the new "WRC" class was announced which allowed the use of ultra lightweight crankshafts, different connecting rods and pistons, and quite a few other changes. These changes were said to push this potential problem of the boxer engine over the borderline. So if you know when the new WRC class came into effect, at least you will have the year. Subaru also won the first three rallys of that season, each with a different driver.

If no one answers it by Monday afternoon, I'll give the answer. I promise I'll make them a bit easier

Arik, glad you liked it but I must say it is definately not one of my nicer pieces of work NickSTi's was a bit better. I just did them to be goofy I'll have to draw you a decent picture one of these days.

it was the 1997 season when Subaru won the first 3 in a row with 3 different drivers. then in the 4th race:Rally Portugal 1997' McRae's car died mysteriously. i think that race was the start of the problems.

Yes! M8 got it just in the nick of time( I was ready to give the answer). Actually both Subarus went out with similar problems in Portugal. Although Prodrive said the two problems were unrelated, many felt they were indeed the same general problem. That began the nightmare on Prodrive street. Lapworth said that just when they thought they found the solution, the same problem would happen again, only caused by something slightly different which made the whole situation very frustrating. Glad that stretch of bad luck with the Impreza is over. The drivers must have felt as if they were driving on eggshells, just waiting for the car to stop running at any moment.

I'll make the next one much easier so you do not have to be a rally guru to get it, you'll just have to know your Subarus a bit. Next one is tomorrow morning.
