Question Really OT: How long to read a 10 GB drive?

Just wondering how long on average it would take to read a 10 GB drive with average specs (latency, seek time, etc.)?

Thanks alot...

I'm not sure exactly what you mean but my 14gig hard drive, which spins at 7200rpm, doesn't take long to get programs up and running. It takes less than 2 minutes to boot up(with apps and wall paper), 30 seconds to shut down.

I do know that defragging takes a heck of a lot longer.

Or if you mean like formatting it... I'd give it a good 30-40 minutes. I know my 18 gig drive took upwards of an hour, if I am remembering correctly.

I've formatted a 20 gig SCSI drive before... it took almost two hours. That's the longest it ever took me to format a drive.

Must have been a low-level format with the SCSI controller, right? That does take a while sometimes.

If you have another system drive, and have NT/Win2K running, use it's disk manager to format.. can you say 5 second format?

Partition it!
Depends how much and how fast ur RAMs, HDD cache etc. are. My 8GB HDD boots up from cold in about 24seconds.
Do you mean reading the entire drive? whoa...

Rajah - 5 second formats are quick formats. I don't do them unless absolutely necessary.

A while ago I had a bunch of stuff installed and decided it was time for a format. Now my installation of Photoshop had ~200 plugins installed at the time (not that I used half of them, it's relevant to the story). After the deletion and moving of all necessary files for me to format, I quickformatted. One of the first things I installed after Windows was Photoshop - which immediately read my drive and found ALL 200 plugins again! (and they worked)

Fact is, quick formatting basically just deletes the FAT table entries (I believe) and leaves the data, so it is all still readable. Photoshop just happens to be written for a Mac, right? Well Mac's don't use th same type of file system as Windows machines do, and I think that Photoshop read the drive differently and found those plugins' data files still around. Scary Scary Scary. For months after that I ran a file shredder to delete things.
