Default XT or XT?

What you buy: the Forester XT or wait for the Outback XT? I nearly bought a FXT in September, but decided to wait a bit. I have a membership to IMBA so all of my purchases will be at invoice without any salesman interaction. I'm thinking the invoice of a Outback XT would be in the $24,500 range with a MSRP around $27,000 - about $1200 to $1500 more than the Forester. Is anyone else in this situation? I have a '99 Outback right now and love it. Right now I'm leaning toward waiting till the summer and going with the Outback XT.

Lol, yer in the Forester forum, so expect to see 'Forester XT' as the answer you'll get. It's the one I'd give.

Obvious answer is wait and see what is offered at what price......thats what I plan to do.

Really like my 01 Forester...BUT.....the new outback has my attention and it is a definite player is my new purchase options. I have specific needs/desires and if the Outback matches them at a fair/resonable price.......well I'm there!

You didn't say why you're buying a new car. I'm going to guess you want more power, and your current Outback runs fine. Wanting more power is something you can wait for until you see what comes out; better yet, even wait until prices drop on OT after the initial release, if that's what you end up wanting....

Is there an Outback XT coming? I stopped following the news after we bought our XT. Oh, man it looks good:

The extra 40 HP should make the heavier OB equally quick. I guess it gets VVT on both intake and exhaust. I wonder if it will get better mileage?

For comparable trim levels Forester has been much less $ than OB. I would expect this to continue with the new Legacy platform.

The Outback will have much more rear seat room, longer load floor, and a bit more cargo volume.

Assuming that the redesign is successful, the OB should have excellent safety ratings but for the current models Forester is better.

If you're willing to wait, drive both. If hurried to buy, the Forester is definitely a great car.

My understanding is the the 2.5l Turbo in the FXT and the OXT is really the same since it is understood that the FXT is way underrated and has actual flywheel power of ~240HP and ~260 ft/lbs (based on tuner measured estimates posted here).

My personal choice is if you want more cargo, go with the Forester. If you don't care about the cargo, go with the STi. To me, the Outback (especially the sedan) is not a selling point compared to many other vehicles in the market at the same price range. The styling, performance, and price doesn't stand out from the rest of the field which doesn't leave much else.

the fxt has dynoed at 15-20 hp higher than wrx which we all know is rated at 230hp..our FXT has VVT ...
soa consevatively rated the FXT to not step on toes of sti owners and to not freak insurance ratings people into thinkiong it's a hot rod.. i wouldn't be expecting a trouncing from new legacy wagon pilots...
