Talking Sunroof Rattle Fix!!

Hi all,
For a while now I've been haunted by a very annoying rattle in my sunroof. It would occur when the sunroof was in the closed position and driving over a bumpy/washboard road.
For the longest time I though it was my rear strut tower brace. However one day I got mad and smacked the ceiling between the dome light and the sunroof opening. To my surprise it rattled just like it did when I hit a bump.

The Fix:
Open the sunroof to the first open position(open but not slid back). You will notice two coiled springs toward the rear of the opening that are attached a small black plastic piece and run rearward. These two springs are covered with a black rubber/plastic tube. REMOVE THEM!
In order to remove I should warn you that you have to either cut the tube lenght-wise or un-hook the front of the spring and slide the tube off, then re-attache the springs. If you choose to un-hook the spring, BE CAREFUL! you don't want to let the spring go or you will have a problem on your hands. I suggest needle nosed vise grips to lock on to the end of the spring.

I removed the tubes yesterday evening and haven't had the rattle since!
Good luck!
Chad

Thank goodness I've got no sun roof rattle in my WRX. Sounds like a PITA to diagnose and fix.

My sunroof stopped creaking once I got front and rear tower bars installed.

I had a look. I do not see the unhookable springs nor the sleeves in question. I tried for 10 min.

Yep, a flap on the roof that pops open, then slides back.
Just 2 or 3 inches back is perfect.
Wind noise
Cool breeze on the face
Tinted windows UP
They used to do it
Weaker chassis be damed
When I catch up, I'll be refreshed

Glad I did not get a sunroof. I had enough rattles to deal with when I got my car, and just about now managed to kill most of them.

I actually wish I could have gotten the 2.5RS w/OUT the sunroof. The absence of it would soooo much stiffen an already beautiful chassis.

Chris.
