Post Got pulled over...

...and I deserved to!

Even though I only "broke the law" for a few minutes, here's the situation:

I had to go to our Orlando office this morning, I set the cruise to 70mph and enjoyed the leisurely 90 minute ride to Orlando. The trip there was very uneventful. After completing my work in the Orlando office I hopped on I-4 for my return trip, again I set the cruise to 70mph and off I went. In the first 20 minutes of driving I was attacked by more road debris than I have ever seen. I got stuck behind 4 rock trucks, throwing sand, pebbles and rocks at my defenseless Scooby, but I finally got around them (I'm sure the cheap paint has many more chips in it now! ). One of the cars in front of me ran over an aluminum can sending it flying into my driver's side mirror, nice big chip into the plastic & paint...thanks! Then I get stuck behind a truck hauling lumber, throwing little peices of wood all over the road...by now I'm getting a little pissed, so I shut the cruise off and wait for an opening to go around the truck. An opening finally shows itself so I downshift and jump into the other lane, accelerating quickly I pass the truck and see the road in front is pretty clear, so in my victory charge I keep accelerating to get away from these "morons". I come up over a small hill (it's Florida, all the hills are small) and what do I see sitting on the side of the interstate...1 Florida Highway Patrol and 2 Osceola County Sheriff units. I immeadiately let off the gas and look down at the speedo as I pass them...Oops, well over 100mph! I look in my rearview (Hopeing they didn't notice me!) and see one of the sheriff cars pulling out, lights on...Damn. I slow down to the speed limit, pull to the right lane and wait for the officer to catch up...no use in trying to get away...no exits in site. He catches up, I pull over, roll the window down, shut the car off. He comes up to the window and gets my license & registration and asks if I know why he pulled me over. I'm very polite and answer "Probably because I was going a little fast back there." He says "Yes, 97 in a 55 is a little fast. Where are you headed?". I tell him back to work in Tampa, and verify "This is a 55 zone, I thought it was a 65 zone"...I was wrong. So he goes back to the cruiser and I see him get his ticket book...great 42mph over the limit, thats $350.00 ticket! So I'm sweating it, thinking how bad the wife will kill me when I get home tonight, what kind of mini van I'll have to get when she makes me sell the RS! He comes back and asks when the last time I got pulled over was, I tell him almost 2 years. He askes what I was pulled over for then, I tell him speeding (In the wife's Subaru!). He asks how fast I was going then, I tell him 94 in a 70. He smiles and says "If you like driving fast you should have my job.". He gives me a ticket for "Failure to obey a traffic control device", penalty: 3 points and $77.00. Whew, my heart starts beating again. He tells me to "Slow it down" and sends me on my way!

Now I'm not complaining, I was speeding and I got caught, and for being honest & polite I got a $77 ticket instead of a $350 ticket because I got impatient. Just thought this post would be a change of pace from the "I got pulled over because cops don't like fast import cars" whining that usually goes on.

Edited for spelling!

Wow, 42 over the limit and its only $350.00. glad you got away with less but here in SoCal anything over 35 I believe is wreckless driving. And being clocked at 100+ is a felony. FAT ticket. Impoundment of vehicle and possible jailtime. You got really lucky!!! Sorry to hear about the body damage.

Pinoy - Yeah I know I was lucky, in Florida they can take you to jail for anything that is more than 30mph over the limit in addition to the fine! It's up to the officer. And Florida's fines are tiered: 0-15 mph over is $168 & 3 points, 16-30 mph over is $268 & 4 points and 31 mph over and up is $350 & 5 points! I kept it as close to the speed limit as possible from then on.

Larry you must have had the same prosecuting attorney that I had one time in the Springs.
I got a ticket on my way to Falcon AFB. I was on my brand new motorcycle, speeding as usual. I am over a hill and sat an Elpaso County Sheriff. I got a ticket for 78 in a 55. The prosecuting attorney let me off with defective equipment. 70 dollars and out the door.

Opie, I think the officer probably appreciated the fact that you didn't try to get away, beg for mercy, or feign ignorance.

3pts is less than you would have gotten for 42 over (you could have gotten a few others tacked on there-- wreckless endangerment, etc) so you definitely have made the best of it.

Will, you don't have a radar detector do you?

I'm driving up to Maryland tomorrow night, so I'll be sure to watch for cops in Georgia and Virginia. They are very strict in Virginia, plus no radar detectors!!

Try getting caught doing 155km/h in a 50 zone, I didn't receive a ticket...I just got a instant court date. Speeding is BAD!!!! obey or be prepared to pay..

In that case, really really glad you got lucky. I think that some of the fines are kind of way out there though. I got a ticket of 60 in a 55 through a construction zone and it was for $270.00. I knew it would be double for being in a construction zone and all but $270.00, DAAAAAAAAYYYYYYMMMMM. HAHAHA. I can laugh about it now. No tickets in 3.5 yrs. Knock on wood. Great now I'll probably get a ticket on my way home from work. Happy driving!!!

I haven't had a speeding ticket since February 1992. 79 in a 55 zone, 24 mph over, which was a big $$ in Colorado.

Occifer wrote on ticket that my black Jeep Cherokee was maroon, but I didn't try to use that to get off. I pleaded "no contest" in court and asked for lenience, and it was written off as driving a defective vehicle for $55 and 2 points.

I know I DESERVE one really soon. I'm bad...

Actually I "have" a radar detector, but I don't use it. The plug that goes into the cigerette lighter isn't compatable with the Subaru's lighter and the radar detector will only work if I hold the plug in! If I let go it shuts off! Maybe I should hard wire it in instead!

Question

Have you thought of getting a radar detector?
Depends on the state if they're legal, but here in NJ my radar has saved me a few possible tickets.
My last ticket (before I got the detector), I was speeding but I was able to plead to a non-point offense.

Have a Nice Day?

What does "driving a defective vehicle" mean? Did you say your speedo was broken?
