Default Went to a Toasters show last night.

Man, if you're even remotely interested in ska music or even maybe punk music, you HAVE to see these guys live.

It was at a small bar/bowling alley/pool hall in a crappy section of Boston. There were maybe 50 people there. Freakin sweet. Their whole band wasn't there, but three or four of the main guys were.

There was no stage, just a staging area. So they'd frequently come out into the audience and play (the horn players). Crazy. Never been to such a small concert with such a popular band. Good times.

edit: for comparison, last time I saw them was at the house of Blues in Boston, where they rocked, and there were about 300 people there.

I saw em about 6-7 years ago in RI at a little club on the beach. What a show! The horn player held a note for a ?minute? ?longer? I think he was rebreathing, but either way, that still sticks out in my mind.
Glad they're still touring.

Wow... I had no idea the Toasters were still around. I may have to go to a show. I used to listen to them back in my high school days.

It was made up by mid-fifties Jamaican jazz musicians talking about getting together and making the guitar skat, skat, sratch strum noise behind the music. It got shortened to ska.

Talking

I'm used to seeing them in small clubs with little turn out. Maybe 50 or so people. My friend opened of them last halloween, by the time the toasters came on there were like 20 people standing around. The place was empty. But i just saw them on my trip to chicago and the place was packed. 2-300 people. It was great. Oh and sledge (the trumpet player) is rebreathing. He's been doing it for years...it's awesome. When I saw his swing band it was like 5 min or something ridiculous like that. Longest I've ever seen him do it.

The Toasters were at UMBC's Quadmania (all day music celebration that used to be free) about seven years ago. I happened to be in the front row. I was videotaping, so one of the band members picks up my video camera and starts taking video while they're playing! How cool is that? So now I have a unique videotaped live performance. And I'd have to say that The Toasters were one of the best bands at Quadmania that year.

Who's mod now, punk?

Any self-respecting Elvis Costello fan who doesn't like Ska needs to kick themselves in the nutz.

I saw the Toasters back in like 95 with Citizen Fish. Good show. The best ska is from the 2-Tone era though.
