Default Is the year on the VIN plaque the actual MY?

The plaque inside the door jam lists 07/86 as the date, but when I ran it through CarFax it says its an 87.

I thought it was an N/A, but it came back as

Year/Make/Model: 1987 MAZDA RX7

Body Style: COUPE
Engine: 1.3L ROTARY TURBO FI
Fuel: GASOLINE
Driveline: REAR WHEEL DRIVE
Manufactured in: JAPAN

What gives?

Could be, my mom's "89" corolla has 1988 on the door jam.

All cars use different ways of figuring out their MY. Just depends on when they claim their actual MY starts.

A company might claim that anything made from Sept 88 and on is an 89.

As for the VIN showing it's a turbo then I have no idea except HEY POP OPEN YOUR HOOD AND FIND OUT.

I thought the turbo's were inside the rotaries which would mean cracking them open?

The door jamb is the assembly date

the VIN will specify the "Model Year" which is determined by the manufacturer

as others have said vehicles are released before the quoted model year begins.

I bought my MY2002 WRX in Oct 2001

I stand corrected. Instead of arguing here, you believe what you wanna believe, and I'm fine with what I know.

It's a similar principle to magazines. The May issue is out in April, sometimes as early as end of March. Manufacturers always build the coming MY during the current year. It will always depend when a particular line is introduced and redesigned. As an example, the 2002 Impreza was rolling off the production line in September of 2000. The 2003 in October of 2002, and the 2004 in September again.

You learn something new every day.

I guess I'm just gonna have to tear it apart and see what it is when it gets here. The input shaft on the tranny looks awfully small, and the splines aren very deep. There isn't a factory boost guage or anything.

So I guess I'm back to sourcing a turbo drivetrain, if it turns out to already be a turbo, well... extra parts never hurts.

The way it looks right now is that it's either gonna have a 13b turbo or an LS1. My bro-in-law and father-in-law are pushing me to do an LS1 swap cause they are GM fans, and they know SQUAT about the Wankel, much like myself.

The Power/Weight ratio of the LS1 looks MIGHTY nice though.
Door placard says 1940 Lbs. is that curb weight?

Max carrying capacity is 680 Lbs.
