Thumbs down Why?

In the world of all that is sane, would Hyundai make, and or have a World Rally Cross team?

ANY! suggestions as to why they would do this would be appreciated....

hehe, my girlfriend has a Hyundai Accent...and well, my car is faster than that 0-60, when I am in reverse...I can only hope they beef them up the size of a cow with elephantitis of the body, and a Non-Anti lift kit, with shoes that have 4 inch soles.

Why wouldn't they have a World Rally Team? thier all-wheel drive Tiburon isn't the worst of cars. I saw one at the Toronto Auto Show, it was there actual rally car, cage, AWD, killer car if you ask me. I know they don't make a street AWD version (they should), but I doubt this is a reason for them NOT to have a team.

The Tiburon used last year was a Formula 2 car (and FWD). For this season they decided to use the Accent as a Group N car. It is my understanding that the AWD Tiburon used in the SCCA rallies makes use of the Lancer drivetrain.

Simple answer Hyundai is trying to cash in like Subaru did ... with a lack of any real automotive heritage, they hope to bank on a proven, race-winning vehicle. Great for the image, outside the US mostly. If Hyundai can (by some miracle) win a manufacturers cup eventually expect to see MASSIVE advertising!

Cool

The Tiburon was originally a Rally Car. They made it a production car to enter the Manu. Championships. Like the Impreza from what I heard. I know I'm right about the Tiburon, but not the Impreza. When I started looking for cars about 7 months ago the Tiburon was the 1# on my list due to its looks for price. They are cheap! And I thought it would look like their AWD rally car. If it was AWD, and it did look like the Rally Car I would be driving that ... Or even the Focus Rally Car, its looks sweet! I love the RS though, and I'm happy with my baby.

I'll have to agree with Joe...and the way it seems, thats a BIG....IF!

Its most likely gonna be like this..

In 1998, we began or stake at the World Rally Cross Championship.

Alas, we are the champions this year, ending subaru's 48 consecutive years of being champions. Conratulations to the 2048 WRC team.

My take on it is that yes, Hyundai is trying to create some media hype with a rally image. The only thing is that the car & drivers are not good enough to compete in the WRC, so they go at it - fully sponsored and then some - in the SCCA pro rallies.

With the kind of backing the hyundai team has, they have quite an advantage over some of the other Rally teams in the SCCA sanctioned rallies.

umm...you may all be a little young for this...but remember about 30 years ago (when Nascar was in it's Hayday ) Well, then road races were called Road Rallies...and guess what. The Mustang and Camaro as well as Chargers, hornets, the superbees, the chevelle etc. all had Rally Sport versions of teh car. And that was about 30 years ago, some more, some less. The term orignally meant road racing. We here hillbillies, know and love the old camaro RS as well as the chargers, yadda yadda yadda. The term orignally was a road racing term. and not untill recently did it become the "standard" to base the off road rally cars on. The cavalier had it, because it is the road race version, with a better suspension, as well as some other tweaks. The cavailer is using the original term. We here Imp RS owners are using the latter, in terms with the whole WRC and Fiaa rally. So in conclusion, they have a right to use it. It is really their word.

I believe SubyPrez20 is talking about Hyundai's WRC team, not their SCCA rally team. Their WRC team is running modified Accents going against our beloved Impreza WRC cars

They haven't made much news this year because this is their debut year in the WRC class. Last year they were running in the F2 class with the Tiburon Coupe.

See more info here http://www.worldrallynews.com/teams/hyundai.html

You guys should realise that ten to fifteen years ago, the general public regarded Subaru the same way as you guys regard Hyundai now. Probably even worse. A big reason for the turnaround in Subaru's image has been their rallying success.

If it worked for Subaru, it could work for Hyundai too. Also, remember Subaru were not dominating world rallying in their first few years competing. It took a long time, so you shouldn't count Hyundai out yet.

Good point Wreckleford. Why wouldn't Hyundai want to get started in rallying as Hucker said? It's advertising. And it's probably the only motorsport that can actually lead to improvements in the car sold to the public. Subaru did have a bit of an advantage in that it was rallying here and there since the seventies and already had quite a few years experience in building 4WD turbocharged cars, but little experience in building an all-out Group A car. So in that respect, yes, the two companies were similar. Same goes for Mitsubishi

SubyPrez, our manufacturers title streak ending back in 1997.

John2.5RS, it took five years. But from a Manufacturer's point of view, at roughly a million dollars a rally, five years can seem like a VERY long time.

Cool

shik,

I said "ending Subaru's 48 consecutive years as champions"..."congratulations to the 2048 team".

Thats to imply that Subaru will win in 2000, and for the next 48 years. Thus, starting a new streak. Got it now?

We seem to forget that we live in a small part of a big world. Hyundai does have a following over sea's. Not to big in Europe but pretty big in Asia. They also have a damn good driver in Allister McCrae.

The Tiburon was originally designed almost ten years ago. It was originally called the HCD II California. It was designed to be a little beach and strip cruiser car with t-tops ,front wheel drive that would be popular with the younger market. The original press release mentioned nothing about it being a rally car and please don't make me go into the attic to find the article.

Hold on a minute. I just have to clear up a little bit of Cavalier misinformation.
The Rally Sport cavalier has no performance
mods whatsoever. I've had two, and had two
regular coupes. (i cant figure out why i keep
getting stuck with that piece of junk car!)
The "rally sport" stickers are just that, stickers. I've also seen dealer installed "GT" stickers on a cavalier.stoopid! It's like the stripe on the rocker
panels you can buy for a new mustang. It has always had the same suspension as the regular coupe, and definately has no "tweaks". It is a gimmick pure and simple. The only difference i can figure between an rs and a regular cavalier is the
rs used to have no rear defroster.
