Post I just saw the commercial for the Rally VW Beetle

And I feel very very dirty...I've got to go wash...::Scrubs hands until they're raw, but the feeling still won't go away::

There's just something wrong with a Rally Beetle...Or at least in the 15 seconds that I saw of it there was...And there's also something even wronger about it winning first hehe...

I think the new beetle is just too round...I could see it hitting a bump on a downslope somewhere and rolling end over end until finally coming to rest on the hood...upside down :-). I'm going to go look at my Scoobie now...That should get rid of that dirty feeling...;-)

OK I have no problem seeing a bug putting around Rally style. I'm even kewl that it won teh production GT... But when the ad says that it beats 300hp rally cars that's when I got upset. Is the commercial refering to the likes of WRX, EVOs etc?! geez....

Are you kidding? Haven't you heard of the "Baja Bug". The "old" beetle kicked butt in 'rally' type races, so there shouldn't be too much questioning as to the "New" Beetle doing the same. Granted, different cars altogether, I'd take a modified old Bug any date for a rally race... (except my sube, of course)!

OMFG...someone beat me to the post!!...I just saw it too, and i cannot believe how stupid Subaru and the other rally involved automotive companies are...Now Volkswagon is going to get more publicity, sponsorships, etc. etc.

Well, SOA you are very stupid, at least someone in this country is trying to awaken our culture to rally's...I guess after that horrific TV experience i just had,it's for the best...

What's wrong with other companies winning?
Eventhough I don't care too much for the beetles styling. I give em' props for doin it. Makes all the cars more competitive.

well, if WV wanna play dirty, then they can be shut down very quickly by saying (without details) that each and every WV gets constantly beaten by Hyundai Tiburons at every ProRally event in North America.

Edit: well, maybe not each and every one, but very close to that

A beefed up AWD bug might make a tough rally car to beat. I also recall the baja bug doing very well. Maybe this is a wake-up call to the other rally manufacturers. VW is no company to laugh at. No matter how "cute" the car looks.

BTW: I only caught the last few seconds of the commercial, but I thought it was very cool!

I think it is a nice blue! Good thing they didn't break out an Audi S or two,
then it would be a different thread.
If you feel threatened in any way, just have Subie Gal eat it for breakfast!
Last I heard, Subaru was well on their way to a fourth manufacturer's championship. a feat only achieved by one other car company. Anyone know who? I don't.

Those air cooled flat fours were bullet proof, required little maitinece(no cooling system besides fan), and could be worked on very easily. That only made a good rally car better.

I don't know about the New Beetle. It's just an ugly Golf.

Karl Schieble is a very good driver who picked the Beetle for marketing reasons. If he'd been driving a Golf and won the production championship who'd have cared? VW sure wouldn't have bothered with a commercial. That car was very close to stock. Of course, they also didn't mention that the car was torn down after every event.

The only Subarus that'd fit into production class are the Justy and 1.8l fwd Imp. Everything else goes into Production GT because multipliers for 4wd & 4 valves/cylinder bump the displacement over the limit.

Scheible was selling the Beetle on Vermont Sports Car's web page. Also, didn't he start racing an Evo this year. His Beetle is pretty good at rallying though. I saw him last year at STPR. He beat my friends brother's Honda. He was pissed that a Beetle beat him too.
