Subaru Stars New pistons after 23K why?

So we've had this engine noise for at least nine months, it has gotten louder over these months. Best to describe it as a regular rattle/click.

Well we took it back to the dealer, I made sure the engine was warm, had been running for half an hour; so the Service guy could give it a listen, he new there was something not quite right.

Later today I called, he told me they were ordering new pistons, and later at service desk enquired why? They had spoken with Subaru Tech and been recommended to install new pistons for cylinder 2 and 4, and a new short block for cylinder 1 and 3 if that was determined as the problem area. Any ideas comments.
Does anyone have 3d drawing of engine curios about these boxers?

I can't imagine dealer actually replacing the pistons. For the amount of work you have to do to get the pistons out, it would be easier to put a new shortblock in it...

I would almost demand a new shortblock rather than have them replace 2 pistons. If they were making that much noise I would be quite concerned about what the cylinder walls look like...

Pistons in 2 and 4 but a shortblock fo 1 and 3???? Not quite following you here.

the shortblock contains the entore rotating assemyl, cranks, rods and pistons. You canot replace half and half. Sounds like you are getting a new shortblock. Have they checked the tensioner yet?

Default Engine noise from 2-4 side

yeah, I does sound like I don't know what I'm talking about. Thanks for your comments. I did try and get more info from them but the young service clerk at 5:30pm didn't seem to clear on it either. What is the procedure to find out what they're doing, "They ordered parts as suggested by the 'Subaru TechHQ'?" Basically I'm happy they are going to address the problem I'm just not to sure sure what they are going to do

I would really like to see some drawings of engine block, 3d are there any around URLs??
