Yes, I heard the same rumor from a reliable source. I did not know they were importing a driver though--like there aren't any deserving U.S. drivers. That sucks.

Most European mid-level rally drivers could mop up the floor with the U.S. series. These are guys who drive rally cars >100 days a year. I get to drive at speed about 10 days a year. Even if I had twice their talent, I wouldn't stand a chance.

Or take a guy like Dean Fry. He's been rallying Subarus in the SCCA series for years. He's a damn good driver, but with only 140 HP in his Legacy, he can't run with the fast guys. Nevertheless, his cornering speeds were radared at faster than Paul Choiniere's. Give a guy like him some factory money and a car--not some Euro-ringer!

Let`s write a same letter to Subaru and Prodrive asking them to consider Pat.
This won`t hurt but it might be worth trying.

Not to take anything away from Pat Richard, but veteran (and underfunded) Subaru driver Greg Healey was running right with Pat in Maine this year. The catch? Greg drives a stock Impreza L, not an RS. No DMS suspension. No SPD tuning. Just pure driving ability.

Get the picture? There's a lot of Subaru driving talent out there that doesn't have the budget to maintain a high profile.

C'mon people! I wouldn't expect an average rally fan to look past the hype, but you are all Subaru enthusiasts, right? Keep an eye out for the very worthy Subaru drivers toiling unappreciated in the cars we love.

Talking

I also heard about the Prodrive/US Rallying effort. I was also told that they are planning a long term effort (ie 5-10 year deals).

Anyway, I've got another tasty tidbit. You know how Subaru has their Road Atlanta driving school? Well, they are also planning a rally school. Apparently, Ivor Wigham's European Rally School will be the home of this operation and I guess he is expecting 25 WRX's to show up soon for conversion to school cars. That is all I know for now.

Hey what about ME!!

I wana drive a factory backed car... I'm a great driver, I can get to work in under 22:54:12 mins in heavy Seattle traffic!!

really though, If the do 'inport' a driver from europe to drive in a North Americal SCCA series (that sounds kinda wrong) I'm sure they get a good driver who can make all of us impreza owner proud.

Has any one seen Mark Utecht drive his OMNI GLH ????? This car is just about bone stock, with a junk yard 2.2 turbo, he always on the pace. he is in the top ten all the time, some of his stage times are in the top 5, I would like to see how he would do in a new WRX ???. "I can't believe how fast he is in that car." RALLY ON /////// Note: Dean FRY is not in the same class as some other names mention on this thread But he is a good driver! ///////////

Personally I love it when Mark Utecht beats Ralph's Supra in an Omni. It forces the powers-that-be to put an early '80s econobox on TV, which they HATE.

Don't count Dean out. That car of his is a complete POS (no offense) weighs a ton, handles like a school bus and runs stock 2.2 horsepower. I bet he would be top-10 capable in a car with some power. Once you've got the turns figured out--and he has--the rest is just area under the curve.

I have raced with Dean Fry years, I bought one of his older cars. when I started (81 GL) rallying dean was a big help, he has alot of time in the seat and I know he has a hell of a lot of rallies under his belt, but we are talking about the SCCA Championship. I think the bar has been raised. Rally on /////

Hey to whomever was saying that stuff about me driving at Maine this year, well, umm, sorry man but we were 87th on the road (we had no tranny so we missed the start) and were passing 5-6 cars PER STAGE and also had nothing to go in terms of speed etc. for except doin it for fun. There is not one single shot of my car not behind another car at that rally. SO while we may have matched times with people, you are missing some of the story. Also, just FYI, last year, we had no DMS, were underfunded, and literally were driving a bone stock RS, WITH THE ONLY MOD being skidplates and crappy LEDA struts with OBS springs, with similar results anyhow.

Just defendin' myself :-).

But yeah, if anyone wants to say some stuff to anyone, DO IT NOW !

Also, on the 'Euro guys will clean up' thing, I am not so sure after seeing some guys at the RIC in Quebec this summer, some of those guys run the WRC and regularly finish say 25th-30th and no, they didn't win the rally. Guys like Seamus Burke etc. were winning stages over them (not to sya Seamus is slow, he's psycho, but he was beating them).

Sorry to rag on you Pat: I was pumping up Greg Healey--who gets no respect--not putting you down.

As a matter of fact, after two broken wheels and being time-barred on day 1, I was just behind you on day 2. Of course, I was sandbagging, driving around 80%, just trying to finish, you know, otherwise I would have passed you for sure!

Yeah, Subie Gal told me that when she met Richard Burns the first thing he wanted to know was who this Pat Richard guy was. Evidently he's afraid his job is in jeopardy! (Just kidding! )

But seriously, Pat already explained the Maine thing. What he failed to mention was he started as first ClubRally only car on the road. They start the ClubRally cars 5 minutes behind the ProRally cars. Even with a 5 minute window he was passing several ProRally cars per stage! And some cars he couldn't get past for a while. At the reseed the organizers moved him up into the top twenty or thereabouts and he still caught and passed a couple of cars in one stage, including a Prodrive Group N WRX!

Pat's too humble. At Charlevoix he also beat the Belgian guys in their Group N Lancers on several stages. In fact on one long stage (about 25 km or so) he finshed 2nd overall, only 14 seconds behind Tom McGeer's 375hp Group A WRX. And I think one of those Belgian guys won the European Championship in Group N this year.

With the way both Subarus and rallying are growing rapidly in popularity here in the states, it would make a hell of alot of sence for Subaru to have a "100 day a year" driver that is already quite familiar with the car and the team drive a factory-backed car.

If indeed a driver does come over here and consistently places in the top positions in the vast majority of the rallies, people just getting into the sport are going to get familiar with seeing a Subaru Impreza at the top of the podium, and being a factory backed effort, will probably have alot of glamour and glitter to go along with it.

I'm not saying one of the North American guys isn't capable of winning as well,( Dean gave me a ride many years ago at Ski Sawmill, and yes I do agree the man can drive) but when you have a golden opportunity to catapolt the image of car that many people still does not know who it's made by, as well as the entire brand image itself, I don't see it being the logical time for a company to be giving tryouts. Establish a winning reputation in the country first, then start looking around at some of the local guys.

Subaru and most of the other works teams are ran out of the UK because when it comes to rallying, that's where the expertise is. From a business standpoint, it makes sence to go with what works, or more importantly, what has been known to work over the years.
