Default 22B STi vs. '04 WRX STi

I've posted this in another forum before, and I wanted to know what the NASIOC thought.

We've all read, heard and seen comparisons between the 2 hot cars from Japan all year (sti vs evo).

What about a comparison of the two greatest Subaru's of all time. The classic Impreza 22B STi vs. the New '04 Impreza WRX STi. As the 04 WRX STi is the closest thing to a rally car we can buy today; the 22B was in 1998.
Engine displacement wise they are more similar that the regular WRX and Evo @ 2.0L; 22B-2.2L vs. '04 WRX STi-2.5L. Both have similar power (04 WRX STi +20hp,+35lbs ft). But i believe the 22B weights less. Both have DCCD's and water cooled intercoolers.

Myself I would love to see a magazine or some car reviewer to put these 2 cars up head to head.

The 22B is, IMO, the best looking Impreza that ever was. When it comes to performance, however, time marches on.

Your questioning may be flawed. Which I would rather have, versus which would "win" the comparison are two different things.

Title of question -> 22B vs 04 WRX STi:

Actually there are 2 question up there:
1) Which would you want to have?
&
2) Which would win the comparison?

sorry about the confusion.

Speaking of the 22B STi. Anybody know the wheels that came with the 22B. I am talking about those multispoke BBS wheels. I am looking for the model, and if they are available.

BTW.....some mag tested a stock 22B and it made about 340WHP. Much more than a USDM STi.

Actually the myth of the 22b having more power than rated is probably not true. The final conclusion came to it has about 300 crank hp. I think 340whp is "a tad" high.

As for the comparison i would say it would be very close. 1/4mile times are about equal and any discrepency's you can chalk up to driver or condition. Braking and handling are about even. The only advantage for either may be the 22b is lighter and has a wide track (may be the same as sti, not sure honestly) 22b get's the "looks" points in my book.

I'd rather have the 22b for a few reasons
-8k redline
-2 doors
-wide body
-limited edition
-2.2l has good "proven" power potential.
-right hand drive (for the ricer in me)
-it's a freaking 22b, what more really needs to be said, i don't even know why this is a comparison

To my eye the 22B is ugly, real ugly. Also I prefer the relatively spacious flexibility of four doors to a cramped coupe. But thats just me. As for 'wide body' and all that stuff the '04 STi has it. Also it has a 7500 RPM fuel cut with an 8K redline (that can be moved via software). The engine is new but coming into its own via the aftermarket. Really outside of production numbers being lower the 22B has nothing on the '04 STi other than mystique.

I'll take four doors and actual availability in the US over mystique any day.
Register one vote for the '04 STi.

Definately the 22b. If only because of the limited factor.

The 22B, anyone who knows thier Subarus well enough would always choose that. Only widebody specific factory car with a closed deck EJ22 engine with DCCD in one of the best body styles ever made.

As of know, IMHO, no Impreza to date can beat that.

04 STi would flat clown the 22B in contests of speed. Time has indeed moved on.

I wouldn't mind owning a 22B, but I don't know that I would trade my STi for one.

I have never driven the 22B of course...I would love to someday.

But from everything that I've read about it, the 22B is truly special.

One thing for certain though, the 22B can definately retain its value over time much better than the STi.

While the 22b has much more cachet than the '04 STi, I'd rather own an '04 for a daily driver.

Nah... this is BS. The reason this rumor is floating around is because the 22b 2.2 liter engine made 75 more HP at mid rpm than the other 2 lilters imprezas (not at peak rpm). Some geniouses decided to add this 75hp to the advertized max HP (which was and still is 276 hp crank).

The reason people get so excited about this car is the huge power at mid-range and closer ratio transmission.

The 04 STi will get a better 0-60, a better quarter mile time and trap speed and better braking than a 22b. The 04 is heavier, more powerfull and more high tech than the 22b.

I would probably pick a 0 mile 22b over a 0 mile 04 STi, but in stock form the 04 will trounce the 22b.

Cars that never get to america sometimes get the "dead rockstar" treatment: They get overhyped.

I second that.

I'd much rather own a 22b simply because of how raw the car is. But I think if you threw the two into a lengthy comparison test similar to SCC's Ultimate Street Car Competition(minus emissions and maybe the grandma test) I think the 04 STi would win. Maybe a close win but I think it'd win.

22b
-seam welded
-8.5'' wheels with 235's stock
-quick ratio steering 13:1
-FORGED internals
-vf22/23 (depending on what 22b it is)
-weighs a shade under 2800 lbs
-280hp
-4.44 final drive

What this means is it puts down more rubber to the ground than the sti. Weighs 400-500 lbs less and only gives up 20 hp. 4.44 will help acceleration. Forged internals are ready for big power. Vf22/23 will make more power than a vf39 if lightly modded. Quick ratio rack means precise handling.
