Default Advice from MINI Guru's - gf looking to buy Cooper/S?

I know you're out there you MINI fans. Besides MiniDan, I really don't know any of you personally, but the numerous coopers in various form showing up to the AutoX's mean to me that you're out there somewhere!

My gf is in need of a car after she graduates this spring and enters the frightening world of "working for a living." We're still tossing around a bunch of ideas, but she absolutely fell in love with the cooper when I showed her some pics. We went to the Philly auto show and she was all over them. Obviously, being a ricer, I would love to have a mini at my disposal for those days when the ricer in me stays in bed. Of course, having never driven one or even RIDDEN in one, I can't go on much other than what I've read and heard. She'd definitely be into the autox and track events, though I'm sure the modding thing would be very light. Just something that she can drive to and from work, play with on the weekends, and allow ME to have a bit of fun in as well!

She's not looking for anything outrageous, and between the two of us, I want to help her make the "right decision." First being whether or not to spring for the cooper s or not (my gut tells me YES) but I just don't know. Likewise, it seems like there are a trillion options on them, so trying to find what is "worthwhile" and what isn't is kinda hard. We'd definitely be looking at used, since I just don't ever want to buy a new car again after seeing my poor WRX's value drop faster than an 88lb drunk college girl. Although the price of the mini's seem to be holding fairly high at the moment.

So I guess I'm just looking for a little advice and a few "sources" I can bounce some questions off of. I'm definitely excited to start doing some research and learn on my own, but I don't even know where to start in terms of decent forums/websites. I found an okay mini forum a while back, but can't find the site any more (it was a black background with white text...) Just looking to find the NABISCO equivalent in the mini world, perhaps some buying guides, some "things to watch out for" etc...

Any help/advice is greatly appreciated. (This includes telling me to piss off, or recommending another car to look at... believe me, I've tried but nothing else seems to catch her eye...)

Get the S. I drive a regular one around and it's piss slow. Thank god it handles nice or else it'd be no fun.

Also spring for the heated seats option. I love warm buns.

PM NeedaScooby. He's had his mini for quite some time and I believe he really likes it.

Here are what I believe to be the 2 biggest Forums in the U.S.

www.mini2.com/forums

and

http://www.northamericanmotoring.com/

as far as Mods go if you decide to, contact AutoSpeed Performance

as of right now they have available from AMD Technik pulleys and the 1-click ecu upgrade. In development is also a mini cooper s cat-back system

Thanks so much everybody - been exploring, and have come across a lot of good UK boards, but it was tough finding some decent USA material. Looks like you got two places I haven't spent much time looking at Frank- thx.

It's a fun chick car that you won't mind borrowing from time to time. We borrowed froggert's MCS for a week and my wife absolutely adored it.

Just watch out for the SUV's because they either won't see you or won't register you as a threat. It's like riding a motorcycle.

I figured you may have been messing. Not sure totally. Hard to tell sometimes over the internet. But I do have a good sense of humor and can take it as well as give it. I don't spend enough time in OT I guess.

Now...the Cooper...If I didn't have my WRX I would consider that car. It just looks like a hell of a good time to drive. Would be fun too being it's so small seeing what you can fit into and such.

Just have her learn on the S. It has a real heavy flywheel so it's pretty hard to stall it compared to other cars.

Thumbs up get the S

that car will always leave you smiling when you drive it. my former car pool partner had one and it is an amazing little car.
it even has tons of head and legroom for the front seats.

few minor nitpicks:
shifter feel is a bit rubbery
1st gear is too tall
considering how it handles the seats should provide more side bolstering

GET THE S!!!!!

LOVE mine...okay total understatement...though i am told that for auto-x a cooper is just as good as the s...but i wouldn't give my s up for the world...

only two downfalls of the car...lack of cup-holders, but for $25 you can get an additional one, and it is mega easy to install...and the car is in need of an LSD...which as soon as i have the money i am getting...

(oh and tell her if she wants the moonroof to get the moonroof...i know you will have people here go on about the integrity of the car being jeopardized....but the moonroof is just wicked cool)

i paid msrp...no higher...

oh and up until march 1st, 2003 i had only driven a manual 2 times...it's intimidating the first time you are on a hill, and some jerk decides "hey let's get as close to the boot as humanly possible", but it is a blast...

oh, and it is a lot of fun when someone goes "oh you drive one of those" and you start talking about it, and you totally end up freaking out the copier repairman who was expecting a girly answer of "yeah isn't it cute?"

Well Cirrus, I had probably the longest test drive ever And after that year, I said wrap one up for me. One of the best handling cars I have driven--Second best front driver EVER! next to an ITR. Mod wise, there is plenty out there, but with so many people making them unique to themselves, stock ones do get rarer

She cant go wrong with the S either. It is one of the easiest sticks I have driven due to the heavy flywheel. I personally want a lighter one, but thats another story .

Feel free to PM me with any specific questions man.

also check out www.newyorkmini.org - it's just starting out, but has some info for locals.

the car has it's faults, but what do you expect for ~$23k? it's an absolutely great value. sucky cupholders, funky interior, long shifter throws, crappy tires, no lsd..

hi kate. hi dan.
