Post Night at Malibu GP dashes my WRC dreams...

Well this is the second time I've gone to Malibu Gran Prix in Redwood City (20hp V-twin carts), and I think I have discovered that I am not so hot of a driver. All my dreams into the toilet!

The first time a few months ago I snuck into the 57-sec range once. Pathetic! This time I really concentrated on the line and got 55-something, once. Rest of the laps were 56-57.

There was hardly anyone there last night so I was actually the fastest, but I remember last time there was a hefty guy running consistent 53s, occasionally dipping into 52s! This guy had to weigh at least 40 lbs more than me! In something this small weight should make a huge difference.

Anyone else gone there? Post some times! I think the key is this last long roundabout leading into an S-curve - you need to brake hard before the roundabout so you can stick to the inner barrier the whole time, and it also sets you up for a near-straight line through the S. Even after 12 laps I couldn't get it right. ARGH!!!!!!

They have a driver school available for cheap @ Malibu GP and they say, no braking...
They also have 1 or 2 "club" cars that are tweaked to the max and maybe the guy you saw was in that...all it takes is practice. All the hotshot, aggressive driving on the street does not = one day at the track or even autox, cuz you can drive aggresively with a cadillac. Go to track events and even autox

hmm... no braking? What kind of advice is that? I'll have to try it out.

If you just have to brake, use your left foot...lightly

I've had an urge to go for the past few weeks...I haven't been there in ages...only been there once...think I ran 56's most of the time...or was that 66....hmm...

Cool

What's the top speed on those carts? Isn't it something like 15mph? I think there is a track out at Davis where you can drive real "carts". It's pretty pricey, but I bet it's a blast.

heh..used to go there all the time. The only consistent thing about malibu is how inconsistent it is! I once switched cars after a pee break and found the new car handled completely differently and my times improved drastically (maybe cuz i was lighter )...also the timing system there is incredibly flaky...if your serious you should bring your own stopwatch. Haven't been there in at least a year, but they used to be really good about giving free laps whenever their lap timer malfunctions(often) or whenever you even get close to catching the dude in front of you...might be fun to rent the whole track for a day...too bad we cant race our subes there!

Yeah, that's about right.

Maybe we ought to bring a tire shaver next time.

Great idea for a BAM at Malibu -- I'm in! Let's make it a Saturday or perhaps some time when the track is less crowded.

Well saturday is definitely crowded. I really like going on weeknights after work. There are a few people there so that you don't burn up your laps too quickly, but it is really relaxed.

I always tell myself I am gonna do like 6 laps and then take a break and think about what I did wrong, and then do the other 6, but I always just end up doing them all at once!

So the consensus seems to be that I should never brake - that is something I would have never ever though of. I guess since it is automatic the engine brakes more than you expect? I will definitely try it out.

One other question: How powerful are karts normally? These Malibu cars say "20hp" right on the engine block.

Let's organize a day at the go-kart tracks. Either Malibu or The Inside Track in Stockton-- the latter being real indoor car racing. Fast, bumper-to-bumper fun.

Subauman, my Malibu times are typically in the high 53s using the old karts. I hear the new V-twin karts are a bit faster.

It really depends on the car they give you too. Some are maintained better than others.

My best time is 54.22 (Somehow, that's stuck in my mind)

That's pretty fast Shiv. The fastest I have ever seen is this short guy, he kept doing 52s, and I saw him eek out a 51.8 eventually.

Okay. Let's really race. Let's go to The Inside Track in Stockton. Screw Malibu. How does Sunday afternoon sound? It's around $15 for a 10 minute race. 17 people per race. We could probably fill up an entire race with Suby folks. We could probably do two races ($30 total). That's 20 minutes of no holds barred flogging. At the end of the event, you get your times, rank, best lap, average lap, etc,. Much much much more fun that Malibu.

Anyone up for it?

I don't know what would be a funnier site, Brucelee in a Miata or a go cart .

heheheh brucelee, don't forget... you're only a few inches taller than I am. I haven't sat in a kart since I was a kid... I don't know if I still fit.

I would definitely be in for that.

Brucelee--Stockton is about 65 miles form Fremont, depending on where you start from. I have to go there all the time for work, it is less than an hour if there is no traffic.

I never brake at Malibu.

Unacceptable in the real world I know, and definitely not what they teach you at race school.

Also: some cars are definitely better than others, or perhaps it's, some cars are good and the rest are sloths.
