Unhappy mystery exhaust leak

ok, so ive had this exhaust leak for a while now, and ive basically replaced every single gasket including the manifold gaskets... i also plugged the egr system.

whenever im driving with the window down, i smell the exhaust really bad... bad enough to the point where carbon monoxide poisoning is an issue

ok, so im thinking it may possibly be the head gasket... if anything a very small leak in the head gasket because i have overheating problems sometimes on the freeway when im at 5000 rpms for more than 30 seconds or so. also, the coolant overflow tank is always full to the top and the coolant smells like gas or oil... kind of a general petroleum smell.

if anyone can help even a little, i would greatly appreciate it.

thanks,
andy

If it is really a headgasket, it won't be a problem for long. You will kill the engine.

To really check for leaks, get the car a bit warm. Then, with the engine running, push a rag against the tail pipe (this seals it) and feel for pressure building up and the engine to start running poor.

If it does this, things are OK. If there is no pressure, have a second person help find the leak. It should be pretty obvious.

yeah, thinking back on it now it cant possibly be the headasket since the engine runs fine and all, coolant and exhasut look fine... as for the petroleum smell in the coolant, i think its just deposits in the resevoir tank from before.

i'll take the cap off my radiator too, and let the engine warm up. i'll put my hand over the top to see if i can feel any pulses i guess.

thanks for the rag suggestion.... thats something i would have never thought of for some reason, lol

thanks,
andy

An oil analysis from www.blackstone-labs.com could find out what is going on and if you have any other problems.

update: im thinking it might be running rich for some reason now... more than it ever has been. i pulled the plugs... they looked completely normal though.

this all started after i pulled my throttle body off to figure out my high idle problem. i thought it might be the gasket, but that turned out to be fine. the smell is still there. its also alot more noticible when im driving hard... (winding it out to 6k each shift)

so... to sum it all up, high HC's on the tail pipe test, and the exhaust has been popping a helluva lot more lately than it ever has.

Leak in the exhaust somewhere is a possibility. Crack in header/manifold, or one of the joints further back.
