Wisdom Teeth Question

I just got back from the dentist for an emergency visit. I have a molar that needs to come out. While I was there, the dentist did a full set of X-rays and found that I have two impacted wisdom teeth, and one that is coming in sideways.

My question is, why do wisdom teeth have to come out? Do they cause problems if they are left in?
