Post Your Favorite Rally Car Of All Time ???

Thought this might be a fun thread....
Lets say top three to be fair....

For me:

1. Lancia Stratos
(MMmm...mid-engine Ferrari power)

2. Subaru Impreza
(not just since we've got'em)

3. Porsche 959
(more of a Dakkar rally car)

Ummm... hello? Pikes Peak Escudo.

That is a real car too... built specifically to climb Pikes' Peak. MMMmmmm... twin twin-turbo V6's and AWD.

I'd love to see a cop try to catch one of those things.

gotta be the Lancia Stratos or the Porsche 959.

There was either a Road and Track or Automobile article some time back where they drove a restored stratos and retold the history of the car. That was such a cool car......drool.....

Some added history to Y2k4Door's post. In '86 the Audi Quattro S1 sport had just over 600h. HB Audi Sport world rally team did a practice at Estoril (Portugal) that season. The times Walter Rorhl turned would have qualified him for 6th in the F1 Grand Prix race that year!

After the crowd mowing RS200 shunt during the Rallye de Portugal, and Henri Toivonen's tragic and controversial death during the Tour de Corse, group B was banned. Almost simultaenously, Audi pulled out of rallying. Just prior to dropping the rally program, Audi Sport had a 1,000+ h.p. engine ready to go. It was never used in FIA WRC competiton.

Ryan...you know it.
Man the Stratos rocks...
Ferrari 2.4 liter V-6...(from the Dino) shoehorned into such a small car...beautiful...
As for engine access, the whole back end of the body hinged backwards...complete access...same with the front...
Being mid engined it must have been nuts to drift in rallies. Probably almost too much....either way it won won won!

It just simply has to be the Mk1 Escort..

No other rally car has won as many International, national and club rallies

Dont forget the MK2 Escort as well Richard, both are still competing regularly in the UK, and still winning their classes

Impreza WRC of course

Any of the group B monsters

The WRC cars of today are as quick if not quicker than the Group B cars, but only produce about 300BHP due to the restrictor, but close to 550 lb/ft of torque

That ~is~ a cool little car.
BMW will be importing the new Mini Cooper next year here to the states...
If you've not seen it, it looks like a modernized version of the origional....much like the new beetle...

Yes, 8complex, ESCUDO!!! That is the craziest dirt-based car I have ever laid eyes on! Twin engine (mid and rear!), each twin-turbo and supercharged! That's gobs of power, putting out close to 1000BHP in standard configuration (if you can call that "standard"!). And of course, AWD!

I don't think any other car can even touch that. Obviously, no production-based vehicle, including the comparatively puny WRC Imprezas and Evos!

Pardon my ignorance.

But that is not a rally car and Pikes Peak is not a rally. It's a hillclimb. Very different to rally.

RSRacer - Thanks for the pics... those are fabulous!

Guys, you don't call a hillclimb a rally? I mean, it's not like there are no turns and you're just plowing up it, you're actually turning and ave to use real skills in the dirt to get up there. That is definetly a rally in MY book.

Besides, I don't care what you say, that car RULES!

Hillclimbers. Do it alone in the car and it last for minutes at the most.

Rally Drivers do it with a partner in the car and it lasts for days..

Where'd you get those picks of the escudo? They are fantastic!

As for my favorite rally car: ANY Porsche, Subaru Impreza, Mitsu Evo. in no particular order.
