Post Borla headers (yes again)

This is for those new members who haven't found the board yet and do a search on headers.

Today I went down to JC Sports to purchase the Borla headers. JC's had a 1st gen. Borla set already there. They did warn me that it would probably rub a little. But nothing to extreme. After they were on, they started up the car and GOOD GRIEF!!! It transformed the sound of the car from the normal Stromung Dual tip that most know to this ultra deep really powerful tone. I couldn't believe it. I instantly fell in love with my new found sound. As I was pulling out I heard the header hitting under the car. It wasn't to bad but by the time I got home it was really bad. (By the way, I have an auto). I went back to JC Sports had them take it off and they promptly refunded my money. JC's is a great business!

Now, my impressions on the 1st gen. Borla headers.

1) Love the sound. It was very deep and powerful especially when just cruising down the road. It did not sound like a 4 cyl.

2) Did not like the fact that they really smack the underside of your car. Borla could have done a much better job. I hope someone comes out with a good set for a decent price soon.

3) I did not like the lack of low end power. I have a MY99 auto and there just wasn't any low end power. (I wasn't running an aftermarket intake at the time. This may have cured that.) It felt like the car was starting off in 2nd gear. (maybe the MY00 are different though)

4) Again I didn't like it hitting the car. It was hitting so hard that I thought it was going to break a weld seam. (perhaps if I had the STI motor mounts it may have cured the hitting)

Anyway, I say, if you're in the mood for some headers wait until some other company designs their own. Don't go Borla.

Minnam dynotested a set on my MY00 auto. Lost *cough* QUITE *cough* a bit of low end torque, and gained a little up top. IMO, not enough to spend the money on..and not to mention it doesn't even fit right. And no, if you have an aftermarket intake, you'll lose even more lowend torque.

You also left out the part about people that have had the welds on them break. The poor welds weren't on just the first generation either.

Talking

Wow, I didn't know about the welds on the second gens. Question is; "does any company out there make a good header for our RS's???

I don't want a NA car that's a dog off the line but hell in the upper end. Most of my driving occurs between 1500 and 4000 rpms. Maybe Trey can come up with something.

SYMS makes headers for our cars.....they are just tad bit hard to get your hands onto though...gonna be a pretty penny.....

Look to SPOmotorsports (yes shameless plug!) to import them soon.

They ARE making them, taking for ever and a day. But anyways COBB just dyno a car with the Borla headers, and I thought he said it only lost a little low end. Did anyone else see that note? I only got a chance to breifly read over it before the board ate that topic.

Cobb Tuning specified that the headers never lost any torque. He didn't talk about HP, though it could be the same case.

I went over to SPO Motorsports the over day and Scott have some Info on the new
headers and exhaust system. The Syms and the Borla headers looked really cool. The dyno
spec.on both header are impressive. The hp and torque are at a different rpm ranges so
you can choose which one fit your application. Both header look to have gained around
15-20 hp and gain in torque. You might contact them and help create demand for the
products so we can have some new headers on the market.
