I got a message that someone was trying to get to me from this board. Thats very uncool! Good thing I work for one of the top internet security companies, that still sucks though. I thought we had some amount of trust on this board, lets not be complete a$$holes here.
ok?

ok, just curious, how would they hack you from this board? wouldn't if have to be from their machine? i don't really get that. plus, that is a good question, what's up with one of our Subie "brothers" trying to hack one of us?

I got a weird message that the board was being hacked. I just figured Imprezer was working on the board.

Wierd message came accross my screen saying "hack attempted", when I check my log, it list the URL for our message board. I've never been hacked from a bulleton board before. Someone out there is testing out some new cloaking skills or something? It just shouldnt have happened to begin with.

no one tried to hack anything. the board really did just puke a little. you'll see those "hack attempt" bs messages more often right before it goes down for the count (usually when the general forum gets to big)
if you don't believe me, fine. otherwise hit refresh and go on like everything is cool. |

Not to increase the paranoia, but my firewall logged 4 attempts in ten minutes(all denied mind you) and they're all coming from here...
http://209.247.41.40/ It's a "where to go to next" machine.... you use it to mask where you're actually coming from. People are always trying to get into machines for some reason, even websites tap into your machine and you probably don't even know it! |

Yeah, most of them do... but four attacks from that one IP (and a WTGTN box to boot) means someone is trying pretty hard..... The only consolation is I use a dial-up, so my IP never remains constant.

BlackIce Defender is good at stopping stuff, but it's reporting system is a piece of crap. They can't even manage to document stuff properly on their website, and it doesn't deal well with some types of packets.
What you saw was probably the result of the board's machine hurting for one reason or another, and you got duplicate/late packets back from the board. Happens all the time. Nothing like the BlackIce user who tried to tell me he was getting attacked form 0.0.0.0. I had to laugh at him for hours. That, and the ones who get attacked from their own IP. Those are good, too. =) SCott |

I'm a network engineer by profession and I can testify that Black Ice sucks. It is no substitute for a firewall in between your dsl/cable modem. Firewalls are coming down in price and if you can't afford that dig up an old computer and use that. My main beef with Black Ice is that it filters stuff leaving your pc and it doesn't tell you what exactly it is filtering. Kind of makes troubleshooting a real b!%ch. Oh, and it's nearly impossible to uninstall after you figure out it sucks. Anyway, it's probably just script kiddies probing you. Just don't leave PCAnywhere running with an easy password.

Yea what is a good one? I'm using ZoneAlarm here, seem to stop a lot of stuff, and gives me plenty of info about what it's stoping. Plus on security check websites it says all my ports are in stealth mode, that's good right?

All you need is Linux and IPChains. Then throw in some freeware things like Abacus project and Bastille, and your all set.... Some people just love to throw their money....

Firewall my ass, why waste your time and money? Grab a ****ty 486, load Slackware on it, and run IPchain like mentioned above. I run my whole home LAN from a cable modem, through a FBSD box running ipfw/natd and no one could get in, unless you know more about port 22 and SSH than I do
Out of the box firewall solutions never work, unless your buying a PIX or something like a Raptor firewall. And why the hell would any "31337" HaX0r try to root your home machine? Trust me, we have bigger fish to fry..... |

This is hilarious...what hacker would waste his time with your machines when far juicer and more challenging targets exist.
Maybe some 12 year old wanting to try out spoofing some router info?...too funny! Maybe someone you pissed off? lol SF |

yep... confirmation... UBB just had a little problem... happens ocassionally... that's what happens with flat-text file bulletin board software that's being used a tad beyond it's capacity.
