Question Which car is the 2.5RS's biggest competitor? (just for discussion)

Just as a general "look-back" I glanced through the new car prices/reviews of 2000. The more I looked the more I thought about what kind of cars the RS is competing with.

Naturally we all give Honda owners a hard time, specifically the late model Civic Si owners. And the Celica has gotten ripped pretty good as well.

But IMO the closest car to the Impreza RS in terms of a competitor is the Golf VR6. After that, I'd have to say the Contour SVT and then (a big stretch) the Beetle turbo (whatever the high trim is).

Thoughts? I don't think the Impreza compares to the common "riceboy" or "boy racer" culture of the Eclipse, Civic, Integra, or Ceclica. And it's a good bit lower priced than the Prelude or the Jetta and a good bit higher priced than the ZX2/3 or the Sunfire/Cavalier performance cars.

Hrmm, up here in Canada, the Golf VR6 (GTI???) is about 3-4k more than the RS. I'd have to say the Civic SiR, (Si for you guys in the States), its about 3K less than the Impreza and it goes, we all know that but hate to admit it. Other than that, look the SVT Contour, as you said.

Well, there's the Neon R/T. Don't under-estimate that car. They do really really well in autocross right out of the show room, thanks to their suspension settings. I don't think they use the stock Dodge suspension but an after-market one. I forgot which.

The Neon R/T isn't made anymore, but I have to say that they looked pretty good in that blue with the white stripes look the Viper made famous.

Anyone else? We debate this all the time indirectly...why not argue about it where it belongs?

I think with the few numbers of this car made, there is no direct competiter. If anything, you can only go by price. But how many sub $20K AWD sport coupes do you know. This is the only one I know, that's why I own one.

Well, I would still say the primary competitiors are:

Celica GTS
Golf 1.8T (NOT the VR6)

These are the other cars I would consider before buying an RS.

Aaaagh! Blasphemy! The Viper didn't make that look famous.

A/C Shelby Cobra.

[edit] um... Celica GT-S, Civic Si, Neon ACR, Integra GS-R, Golf GTI 1.8T & VR6, Focus ZX3, Contour SVT, etc.

Greg.

I'm not sure about the Audi's 0-60 but the Celica has been tested @ 6.8 for reference...

Our RS is pretty good in this group and would do much better in the slalom if real tires were used.
Now before you hit the reply button let me say that I'm not saying that all these cars are in our league...of course not...they range from 12k to 26k...just thought I'd insert SCCs thoughts on the surrounding cars.
...and don't get me started with a comparison of "base price" and the included amenities...(ie: our 19k base price comes with MUCH more than the others...power everything, ABS, Sunroof, tilt wheel, etc...)
On average adding a sunroof to the other cars costs $800...and that's IF you can get it alone and NOT with a "prefered package"...
OK...I'm done...

The Integra GSR, the Ceclica GS, and the GTI VR6 ... Are our main competitors. Price wise not performace wise, don't jump ALL over me. the GTI is the only other car that compares price wise.

When I was looking to get my RS, the only other car I looked at was the GTI VR6. But I didn't even test drive it.

You can not deny the Impreza 2.2

Its got looks just like the Impreza 2.5

Hell, some would say its like the same car or something, just with a smaller engine and no tacky hardware. From what I hear you can even get them serviced at the same place. And some parts are interchangeable. And best of all, it costs less. Hard to believe, but true. And it has some sort of Postal Service heritage that goes well against the Rally image of the RS. You know, rain sleet or snow, the get the mail thru. And you can get it in a wagon, is that cool or what.

Ok, Ill stop drinking now.

I can't believe this topic even came up! Every one knows the RS has no equal! Nothing compares to the perfect-ness (is that a word) that is the Subaru Impreza 2.5RS. NOTHING!!!
Why yes, as a matter of fact, the sky is rally blue pearl in my world.

BTW, what exactly is a Neon ACR? I've seen that tossed around here a few times. Is that just a race-prepped Neon???

Any ACR vehicle that D/C makes is an 'American Club Racing' version. They have spent years developing these cars and in most cases are a far cry from the regular vehicle. They are lighter, more powerful and come ready to race (practically) out of the box. The Neon ACR is probably the most dominate car there ever has been in Solo2. At the Petersburg ProSolo, I watched in awe as a Neon ACR held its own against a SHELBY SERIES1. You know the ground up Carol Shelby supercar. There are less of those on this planet than there are hours in the day right now. And they cost how much and have how much engineering time in them? A Neon ACR is a small economy car that just happens to kick some serious ass. And if you dont believe me, go ask any Nationally competitive autocrosser. Not every likes them, but you must respect them. Lets see Subaru sell us a car, made specifically for racing, sticker priced below 15K. It's not going to happen, geez, Id be happy with the sunroof and power stuff being optional. And for anyone paying attention, it was a Neon ACR that beat me in Peru, and a Neon RT that I beat in Petersburg (well, I beat that ACR too).

You really must understand that Dodge takes motorsports very seriously. And its not all just drag and NASCAR. I fear the day they launch a WRC campain.

Grrrrr... I hate those Neons. The top of my class is a Neon and my goal is to beat him by the end of this year.

I don't know exactly what it is but there are a few specs here.

Ackkkk! The Viper did NOT make the blue w/white stripe paint scheme famous! Those are actually called Shelby stripes because they were first used on Shelby Mustangs and Cobras by my idol, Carrol Shelby. Dodge stole those! (Actually, Carrol let them use them.)

I remember from poking around on SE-R.net that the ACR races in a class lower than the sum of it's parts would dictate because they are stock, or maybe bceause of some agreement. Is this the case?

Love them or hate them, you cant deny them. The Neon rules DS. That is why the SE-R guy dont like them, because they are allways getting beat by Neons. Well, there is no doubt there could be a little something funny going on with the Neon and the SCCA, but either way, it's just like the Type R in GS. Cant please all of the people all of the time.

8Complex- you need to get the car to rotate to beat a Neon. Make the rear end of your car as stiff as you can, then drive the tightest line you can. Make the thing dance. You'll will have the Neon running for cover. Or is it a snake in the Neon, it he beatable ever?

Like it or not, the 99/00 civic Si IS more than a worthy competitor to the RS.. sure it doesnt have AWD, and the riceboy culture you would be associated with is hard to shake, but the car itself, off the showroom floor you would have to be pretty biased to think otherwise.. just ask that dude who owns both an Si and an RS... yes they're two different cars for two different objectives, but its still a more than worthy competitor..

not here to troll or anything, just sometimes i get a little frustrated with all the bias against honda/acura, just because of the riceboy/gansta culture (most)their owners display..

sure you can say, go back to clubsi or dont read this BB, but i really enjoy your posts, and my best friend just got himself a subie, and i LOVE IT...

The Civic Si isn't a bad car - they're really a neat little piece of engineering.. They're certainly a worthy opponent of the RS - I didn't even look at one, though, because of the riceboy image.. Same goes with the Integra - wow, that Type R is a great car, but everybody and their brother has a base 'teg with VTEC stickers on it..

Even Mitsu hadn't screwed it up, I'd say that the Eclipse GSX is another good choice..

A friend just bought a Ford ZX-2 escort - I know it's a ford, and an escort at that, but the running gear isn't bad, and the engine is nicely moddable..

The biggest one? The Golf Turbo - I loved the VR6 but didn't want all the crap - the leather, the "wood dash" - the 1.8T looks to be the solution, and that engine should be bulletproof.

Yeah, me too, thats the thing i most hate about owning one, everyone thinks youre either a riceboy or a thug, and everyone wants to race you to see if you have a real Si (mine's black, not blue)

Thats one of the biggest reasons i want either an RS or a WRX

Quote:

Yeah, mitsu pussied out with the eclipse, i mean WTF? why "fix" something that isnt broken in the first place?! Although if you think the RS's are rattletraps, whew! eclipse's are worse!

I went to look at these last weekend, i *did* want the leather though, but its not even a dealer installed option The only drawback is that i would be really tempted to chip the car, but i dont want to void my warranty that easily ( i dont have mechanical abilities) but i've always been a vw nut..

all in all, its very hard to find a suitable competitor for the impreza, the AWD gives it such an edge over so many other cars in the sense of being different! ALL cars should be AWD!! IMO!! heh...

I was playing "pass tag" with a Contour SVT...they seem like they're the equals to the RS, and will be even more the competitor as the RS becomes a "sport sedan" and not a "sport coupe".

Like I said, the Si competes with the various minidomestics (Cavalier Z24, ZX2, ZX3, Sunfire GT) more than our cars. The torque and potential HP for the RS as well as the AWD and price aren't comparable.

Re: the Neon...I can honestly say that if I could have found the Neon R/T (or ACR) I would have chose it over the RS. I look at them now and they are amazing cars and those stripes (yes, I know the Shelby stang used em but come on, I'm 16, before my time, etc.) But it was such a hassle and the RS was so beautiful in rally blue...

I love my car.

All I have to say is, THERE IS NO COMPETITION!! okay, I feel better. In the price, feature, etc. It isn't the best in one specific catagory but it is an above average, all around car. That's why I love Sube's. And they're unique!
