Question Help

The Mrs and I have been out driving cars for a second vehicle. (The chain of events that have resulted from dropping the tranny in our old truck has been amazing). Unloaded the old Dodge, traded the Grand Cherokee for a 4WD Dakota, bought an old Sub wagon dirt cheap (will make about 20% on it, I think)for transportation until we decide on a new car, and have driven so many damned subcompacts and sporty cars that we can't remember what does what anymore. Two stuck with us though. The RS and Prelude. Although we both liked the precision and powerband of the stock Prelude all bets would be off in poopy weather. So, we are both opting for the RS given we live in the Rockies (AWD), we have owned and loved Subarus in the past, and the RS has just a bit more space. Local dealer will give us an RS for 1% over invoice, but there are a few things we do not particularly like about it. The cosmetic exterior "extras", (scoop, vents, and spoiler seem silly given the performance level of the stock RS.) We also found it sways, or as she puts it, has a greater "Yah Rate" in quick hard corners than others in this class. (Shame on us, we took it for a 90 minute test drive thru the Colorado National Monument. Only had one Ranger wagging his finger at us.) Also, it seemed to lack mo at the top of the power band. Would appreciate any info or links to info regarding options to get rid of the cosmetic crap OR a way to put that scoop to use, a way to take care of the sway, and is there any way to get some decent gains in HP without spending several grand? Are there any roof racks that go on the RS? Also, is anyone in the know for what is in store for the 2001 RS?

Don't flame me, I am not a car junkie, i just know how to drive them at thier limit. It is time to come back to the Sub fold, but with a slant towards performance, I think. Suggestions are appreciated

One thing to note is that the stock tires on the RS (Potenza RE92s) are VERY bad. Although they are Z rated they do not perform as such. With good tires the RS won't feel "yawish"...especially if you get the bigger rear anti-sway bar...$130 for a standard 18mm one or the more popular $180 adjustable 18 - 22 mm bar. From the factory Sport Compact Car Magazine said that both the 4 door RS and the Prelude did 0-60 in 7.7 seconds. The RS can be easily be faster.
They also said that in handling the RS can carry a higher speed through the slalom then the Prelude yet holds less lateral Gs.

RS:
Slolum: 64.1 mph Lateral G: .82g

Prelude:
Slolum: 63.7 mph Lateral G: .90g

With decent tires the RS is even better...

By the way the info was from the April issue of Sport Compact Car (8 Great Rides issue)

links? I think the download section has a mod to made the hood scoop active.
Wing? too high? get the sedan its wing is small, and you get two more doors for only 5 lbs.

If you can live with the stock suspension for a little bit while you break in the new car, you could get rid of the cr@ppy tires and get an aftermarket suspension which should lower the car by .75"-1.25" which will also help the body roll as well as a larger swaybar and endlinks. No official word on the MY01 but it will probably be the same as MY00 with the gauge pack and cd player standard. Some people have made the hood scoop functional but they are mostly homemade jobs. I'm sure someone will develop a polished version soon. The MY02 should also bring around a 2.0L 230hp turbo version with a different body style.

Thanks for the responses. Did a little due diligence last night and cannot believe how much info is on the web about this car. Still, that damn wing and scoop........just plain don't like them. I would much rather have a wolf in sheeps clothing than a sheep in wolves clothing and the RS reminds me of the latter with the cosmetic crap. I do like the "raw" feel of the RS very much though and I know with a little work it would be an absolute corner killer. Decisions Decisions.

Re: the looks...to each his own. I like them.

BUT you could just as easily find an Impreza hood or two and with a little cash get it paint matched and all...and if you get the sedan the wing is rather minute for a "performance car".

I have no doubt that someone eventually would be interested in an RS hood to put on their L.

As for the handling...sway bar will make you smile every time you drive the car. But make sure you put a little more pop in it too...I can't see the base 165 hp as entertaining as a modified 190 hp no matter how many suspension tricks you have up your sleeve (or in your wallet).

Well, I know people have removed the wing, and had the holes filled and painted at a body shop. It would not be too expensive. You could sell the hood too, and/or swap for an Impreza L model hood, without the vents and scoop (very quickly on this site I bet). Just be aware that the Blue Ridge Pearl is a new color for 2000 (replaced 98&99 Black). The white and silver were new in 99, and are available in 2000. So depending on what color you pick, it may limit the availability to trade with others. I am not sure if insurane is a concern, but here in Boston, the Rs is considered a compact car (not a sports car), and the Integra GSR I was thinking about was much more expensive to insure. I would think a Vtec Prelude would also be considered a sports car. I was unsure about the syling in the beginning, but it does grow on you. I have a white 99, but if you go with a darker color, it tends to hide the flashy cosmetics. About improving handling, I have a 20mm rear sway bar ($165) that helps alot, and plan on purchasing Eibach springs ($289) to run on stock struts. Some do not recommend the springs with stock struts, but I do not want to lose ride quality. I drive on dirt roads in Vermont alot. This should improve the handling and understeer alot, and pretty much eliminate sway. The springs only lower the car 3/4", so I will still have plenty of ground clearence. I have read good things about this setup, and can't wait to try it.
I may buy STI Ver 5 struts, to add to the handling, but have not decided yet.

Why not forgoe the RS package and just get a plain Impreza? The 2.2 still has plenty of power and weighs less without all the plastic add-ons. Optioned out correctly (alloys, bigger tires) or aftermarket tuned it will be just as nice as an RS without the RS price tag and all the stuff you don't like about it.

If my car was ONE year newer I'd swap you the hood and front facia in a heartbeat...(95 2.2 L)
