Default Nasty Clunking

I have a 98 outback wagon that is clunking some kind of fierce when i hit bumps or pull out of the driveway at an angle. I got the car second or third hand the first owner did no maintence on the suspension since day 1 i replaced the struts and endlinks 123000 miles later. I cannot figure out weather it is ball joint or just bushings i need some idea of what i am looking for so i can figure it out. If the bushings are cheap enought i may just replace them all.

I am also looking for a spare tire or a steelie with a fullsized tire since you cannot buy a replacement spare.

I hear a clunking like you're talking about when I turn really quick, especially when it is off of a curb...I saw another thread, that had somebody with an STI that was doing it to. I just though it was normal...

Some clunking is normal but this is definatly not normal. It is a really nast noise. I am mostly wondering what bushings are back there that would wear out and if they can be replaced without buying complete arms and links.

My Legacy and my moms Outback both clunk, expecially when going over a bunch of bumps in a row. Sounds like hitting a tree with a metal pole.

Read this thread, there's a TSB about the "clunk":

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...ighlight=clunk

Since Legacy Outback basically = Legacy, you can search for stuff in the Legacy forum and pretty much assume it applies to Outbacks as well. I have come to terms with my clunking car and just accepted it as a "normal" quirk. Still annoying though.

I'd try local salvage yards for the spare. I picked up a 14" steelie for $15.

BlackRS:

Did you ever figure out what the clunking was?

Recently purchased an '01 Outback with 38,000. Makes an awfully annoying clunking sound emanating from what appears to be left rear wheel well whenever making turns, as described above. Interestingly does not occur when hitting a bump head-on.

I noticed that the sound disappears when the seats are folded down to carry cargo. Could the cause be related to a loose/faulty seat back latch mechanism (which is located right above the real wheel well)? Perhaps the torsional forces placed upon the frame going around turns causes seat movement.

Thanks.

How about sway bar links? If they are loose in any way, you will get a clunking noise when you hit bumps at an angle.
