I would lose about 0.12 seconds using full rear versus the "auto" mode...no matter how hard I would launch.

Full-rear would make a bigger difference if you had a set of drag radials for the rear, I would assume
If you're just running the stock tires, full-auto seems to be the way to fly. If I get the 6spd in my 03 this summer, I'll probably just buy a set of drag radials for the rear and mount them on a set of wider wheels, too lazy to work to make the money to get a set for the front too

Wouldn't you go slower down the track. More loss to front than rear? I don't remember, but for some reason I keep thinking if it was in the front you would diff. go slower.

That's why you'd set it 50:50, then after the first shift, put it to 35:65 then continue racing down the straight.

You realize that's more or less what auto mode does?

Well, not exactly...it waits until there is spin from the rears off line to begin locking the the dif. But once you take off it frees the dif again. The electromagnetic clutch that transfers torque between the gears in the planetary set usually isn't engaged unless there is some difference in speed between front and rear, such as when cornering or when there is wheel spin.

At any rate it would seem that lock offline, followed by free (after the launch) is the fastest way.....provided you have enough torque on launch to prevent bogging the launch.
