Default AC refrigerant undercharged!

AC refrigerant undercharged

Just had the AC condensor out (thank you Genera for the $$) and found something interesting. The Forester is supposed to have 20 to 23 ounces of refrigerant in the AC system. The actual amount was 16 ounces, a 20% to 30% undercharge. When they put the condensor back in the refrigerant was topped off for the full 23 ounces and the AC now seems to blow colder.

Talking to the service tech he said it is very common for new vehicles to be low on refrigerant. I'm definitely going to take my '96 Outback over for a recharge since its AC has never been real good. It may be we've had low refrigerant for the past 8 years!

i've never heard of new cars coming undercharged, but after 3 or 4 years, and A/C system is gonna be undercharged. the rubber hoses that are part of the system naturally leak, just like you tires. rubber is actually a porous material and overtime you are slowly losing refridgerant. you're old outback should have recharged years ago.

not sure what to tell you about the '04

This was reported by the shop that does about 40 test fits per year for aftermarket condensors. The mechanic said that many are undercharged. These are generally new vehicles with no AC problems.

Thanks though on the comment about older vehicles. I really noticed it most last summer as we took a long camping/driving trip in really hot weather. I'll try to get the Outback over to the shop tomorrow for a charge.
