Default Speeding ticket- need some advice

Some of you may remember I was looking for advice a month ago about a trip I was taking to Whistler. Thanks for everything you all suggested, we had a wonderful time in Vancouver, even got some karting in (that track in Richmond is slick!). However, on the way back from Whistler on Highway 99 in Squamish one of the friendly officers waved me over to give me a $196 fine for speeding. I believe he mentioned that I was doing 112 in an 80, but oddly enough nothing like that is listed on the ticket. Is this typical? All the tickets states is “speeding against highway signs”, pay $196. The whole thing took less than three minutes before he took off to give a ticket to another vehicle that his partner had flagged down.

I plan to contest, but appearing in person for a hearing is clearly not an option. Anyone have any input? The lack of a speed on the ticket seems very unusual to me.

Thanks,
Paul

I've noticed they don't put the speed on the ticket, or if they do it's just scribbled in a corner or something. Also, I don't believe there's a way to contest a ticket without showing up to a hearing in person.

You mail in stating that you'd like to contest and eventually you'll get a hearing date, and I think at that point you can ask to reschedule. Since you can't show up, at best this will delay things possibly a couple years.

You could luck out if you contest it. I've contested 2 tickets and never even got a date to go to court. Maybe I lucked out and they were so backlogged they didn't get to mine in time.
There must be some sort of time limit they have to set a court date, dunno, I'm not a lawyer.

How long has it been? I had one maybe 6 years ago and I think mine took well over a year before I got my date. I showed up but the officer didn't so it got tossed.

yea, well on my 690 dollar speeding ticket I had "speeding against a highway sign" listed too.. It happened when I wanted to pass a car going slowly in the passing lane.. so I sped to around emm.. well.. anyway.. 20 minutes later the police van that I didn't know was chasing me caught up.. and gave me the ticket..

Not much you can do against it, but in my case, I got out of it by writing an essay on why speeding is bad..

yea, just ignore the ticket...for locals, you should fight any ticket that a non-traffic cop gives you. Traffic cops have to go to court, it's their job, but non-traffic cops will have to go in on their days off, so they usually won't show up (when I went to fight a ticket, I chatted up a lady-cop outside the court room and she gave me the scoop).

Been about 3 years since the last one I disputed, doubt I'll be hearing from them at this point. I've renewed my D/L too so obviously they're not on my record as not being paid.

Immigration might get your record or something when you come into the country?

That won't work because its the drivers fault not the car. If they ever decide to check our ID out at the border then you're screwed if you do nothing about this ticket.
