Arrow A lesson Learned

So, today I learned that 99RS wheels will not fit on my 93L Wagon. I guess my suspension is getting old and there would be no way of driving without some sort of rubbing. Doh.

Another thing that I learned today is that with the correct ammount of change in the change holders, when you go around a corner and the change jingles, it sounds a little like the seatbelt releasing. I kept trying to re-connect the seatbelt even though it was already fastened.

Anyone else know of interesting Subaru quirks, of have any ideas on where I might be able to find some nice looking wheels C-H-E-A-P?

Thanks,
Andy

There's always been that hesitation problem, but I don't know if it existing in your model year. What size tires are you looking for and what price range? If your running 13's right now, running 15's will be a drastic improvement in ride and a decent set of 15's are not that much. Problem is paying for new tires. Unfortunately, tires are a rip off.

Even 14" wheels would be an improvement over the 13's. You can get very good tires in size P185/65R14 for around $60@.

Yeah, that's about right.

Andy: I doubt it's a problem with your suspension; more likely it's the overall tire diameter that is different between various Subaru models.

In my case the car came with 195/60R15, which has an equivalent overall diameter to 205/50R16 (roughly). Note this is NOT the same as the 205/55R16 of the RS. I bet you need to run some crazy low profile tire on the 16" wheels in order to get them to fit (not a bad thing, they'll look, ahem, trick).

Check your current tire size in a table such as this and find the matching 16" tire:

Question

Am I the only one who seems to be having trouble finding aftermarket wheels to fit my car?!?!

Wow! Pretty getto. See if you can sell those on ebay or something and use the money towards new wheels and tires.

Well, the proper thing would be to burn them, but that leaves you out in the cold

Oh yeah! go to tire rack to find the wheels that fit.

Hello,

Ummm, my '95 came with 13" rims... 165/80R13 tires, too. I've put RS tires on my car - and even put 215/50R16s on once, just for fun. No rubbing. C'mon Joe, you know as well as I do that there is no difference between years in terms of fit. Something else is the problem. When I swapped suspensions, from stock 2WD non-sporty to the RS suspension, my car got lowered by about 1/2 inch. And still, the RS rims/tires fit perfectly. Of course, I prefer my 205/50R15s over the RS size...

But, the fit with stock suspension should be BETTER than on the RS - unless the suspesnion is sagging a lot.

Joel: did you try to fit the 16's BEFORE you swapped the rear guts? Perhaps the 2WD rear suspension has a bit more track, which could be the cause of Andy's rubbing.

Or maybe he has that really awesome pneumatic suspension that came on some of the earlier Imprezas!!

I wonder if said suspension can still be obtained as a service part...

Hello,

I guess you could be right on that count. However, wheels and tires were my first mod. Mine are no where near rubbing and weren't back then, but you're right, I tried the 16s once I was rear-converted already.

Well 16 inch wheels will fit but the tires would have to be a lower profile. My car must just be a freak.

Sure, I might be interested. However I tried a pair of 99RS wheels, just leaned them up against my car, and there was only about a half inch of clearence at the rear wheel wells. The fron looked like they might fit. Maybe I will come by and take a look sometime. Tires?

Thanks,
Andy
