Default Hella Supertones?

I'm considering getting a pair . . . but I'm trying to decide between the 300/350Hz combo and the 300/500Hz combo (the latter is more expensive, and louder). I'm less concerned about loudness than with the sound - has anyone heard both of these? Is there much difference?

um, one is louder than the other

Truth be told, depending where mount the horns you won't be able to tell the difference in the car. Although you'll sure know when your alarm goes off.

I think the "dual kit" comes together with 300/500Hz. It would be "louder" because the 500Hz would be a higher frequency (ie. more shrill sounding, sounds almost like a banshee)

I think for the 300/350 combo you have to buy each horn separately, but I think 300/350 would sound closer in tone to traditional stock horns.

Honestly, whichever route you go, it's not like you are going to honk them all the time to see if you can tell the difference .

I have an in-cabin toggle switch so I can trigger either stock (2 horns, better dispersion) or stock + HELLA (2+2=4 horns, dispersion + hella piercing) all at once triggered by the horn switch. I did, however, make sure to power the HELLA's with their own dedicated relay though.

Overkill? yes, definitely . -- btw, I've only had to really use it once (to get someone out of the way in a hurry) -- let's just say it worked

Yeah, that's about right.

Dang, this guy takes his horns seriously.

Another thumbs up for the Supertones. They're the electromechanical type, which seems a lot more reliable than the air horn type. I don't know how KFC kept his air horns working for so long when mine and all my friends' went within a year or so.

I once organized a group buy for the Supertones and would be interested in a set myself ... where are you getting them?

Go with the 300/350. Unless you really want to give others a rude shock

BTW it sounds just like the stock BMW/Benz euro luxury type of horn.

I think I'm going to buy them off eBay - the 300/350 pair is going for about $45US, the 300/500 pair is about $65US.

When I get them, do you guys want to have a "tech night" for the install? I'm thinking of painting them blue instead of red and hooking them up to a switch as well . . .

Just a note, because of the way they are mande, i.e. trumpet like horn, they are quite a squeeze in the stock horn position. I had to flex the steel bracket of the horn to just barely squeeze it in with the 'trumpets' facing downwards.

Are you sure we're talking about the same ones? From the pictures, they look like disc-type horns, not trumpets . . .

Yeah, that's about right.

Eh? What trumpets? Yeah, I'm pretty sure they're the disc type. One mounts in the stock '02+ location no problem, and for the other one you can use a Forester bracket or just make one...

To clarify - there are two "red" coloured electromechanica Hella aftermarket horns that are being talked about here:

A. Hella supertone metal "disc" type (they look like unicron -- ie. the transformer, before he eats a planet ) from the front, and have a red-painted metal exoskeleton around it that can be removed and painted separately if you like. You can either buy the "Supertone" discs as a pre-boxed 300/500Hz pair, or separately (in which case you buy one 300, and one 350 I think)

B. Hella "trumpet" type (they look like red seashells (albeit large, seashells). I'm not sure of the construction, frequencies, and/or pair/single buy method for these, but I'm sure STi-Mulation can tell you more about them.

I have (A) and STi-Mulation has (B). Mine sound obnoxiously loud while STi-Mulation's sound (I've heard them personally) are very german/euro-like -- a nice classy tone.

BTW - both (A) and (B) are louder than stock.

For Mounting (A), I mounted both to the center beam support, and relocated the original stock horn up and towards the passenger side there's already a hole in the GD/GG front skeleton to do this) (it may or may not require a slight extension to the stock wiring to do this)

hope that clears up some of the Q's. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

have fun!

Right on the nose.

I'd be down for a set in the not so distant future and it seems as though many others express certain interests in this as well. Maybe we could gather up a group buy? (not thinking of heading one up, just a mere suggestion)

I just e-mailed PDM for pricing, but from what I've heard, they don't give discounts for group buys. There's a pair of Supertones on eBay that ends today for around $30US, so I'll probably go for those. However, if people do end up buying some from PDM, I'm willing to host a tech day for installs.

EDIT - Ouch! $108+tax at PDM!

If we have a tech night to install these bad boys, I'll definately get a pair from EBay! Do you have links from where your going to buy from EBay?

If we all buy together and get it shipped to one address, we might get savings to shipping. Should we start a new thread?

Well, maybe I should tell you which one I'm going to bid on, so that we don't get into a bidding war :
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...K%3AMEBWA%3AIT
The auction ends in about five hours, so I'll let you know if I get them or not.

This seller/vendor seems to have several of these up at any one time, but I haven't seen any dutch auctions for the Hellas. If I win this bid, I'll e-mail the seller and see if he would be interested in a group buy. It says that he only ships to the States, so I was going to have them shipped to my sister in California and have her send them up.

Okay, here's the scoop. I missed that other auction I mentioned, but I found a dutch auction with a Buy It Now price of $44.00US ($58.30CDN at current exchange rate). There are four sets, so if we buy together we can split the cost of shipping (I can ship to my sister, unless someone has a US shipping address we can use). Here's the auction URL:

That ebay auction is for the 300 + 375hz horns thought right??

there's also the 300 + 500hz horns that he's selling.. but for 15 bucks more though...

I once did a Group Buy for Supertones at $60US apiece. Better deals can be found, dunno about customs though.

I don't mind getting the 300/375 set . . . but since it's the same seller, if people want to get the 300/500 set, we can still save on shipping if we get them sent together.

EDIT - Necro - $60US is exactly what the Buy It Now price is for the 300/500 set.

Okay, I just bought mine (300/375) . . . if anyone else wants in to cut shipping costs, better buy soon. Auction ends today (fixed price).
