Cool Should I move to AZ

Hi there !

I have been considering moving lately. I was born & raised in Connecticut. Still here- that’s the problem!

I have recently been contemplating what it would be like to live in/around Phoenix.
I currently work in aerospace engineering, would like to stay in the field if possible.

So here are a few questions for you locals:

1) Is there anything for a single 25 year old male to do out there? ( I’m sure there is ….just leaving the question open to encourage a variety of answers)
2) Are there any other aerospace companies out there besides Goodrich & Lockheed?
3) What area/areas of Phoenix would you recommend living? ….I really don’t want to buy a house or condo right off the bat ….If I move out there ….I would like to rent for 6 months or so …just to get a feel for the state ( I really prefer Stucco spl* exterior walls with tile roofs
4) How will cops typically react to a sonic yellow car out there?
5) Sorry ladies …..No offense. …But I have to ask: On the average, are single women nice? ( Up here in CT, the majority have attitudes that leave much to be desired ) …..While I’m at it …. Is it true that there is a large “proportion of blondes” out there? ( - Sorry they are my weakness, not many of them back home in Italy)
6) Last but not least : Why would you recommend or Not recommend someone moving out to Arizona?

P.s. I love water sports, & working on my tan at the beach …I know there is no Ocean in AZ – am I out of luck? ….or are there options?

I cant answer most of those question, but I moved to PHX from LI over 2 years ago. I love it out here. Yes it's freakin hot, but I'll take hot over the bitter cold any day. You guys are getting snow now, I've been using the AC...

In general, I think you will find all people are nicer here. Venture into Snottsdale (no offense to scottsdale peeps ) and you'll get a taste of what you are used to in the tri-state area. I try to stay away from there because it reminds me so much of NY.

But there are plenty of places to live out here. I would try to see where you will be working before you choose a place. There are also places you want to stay away from.... Before I came out here, I came out for a week on a reconnaissance mission and checked out a bunch of places.

Where in CT are you from? I have relatives in Stanford and Darien. I would imagine its the same in CT , but on LI there aren't apartment complexes. Out here they are abundant. You should be able to easily get a two bedroom for $700-$800 in a decent neighborhood. You cant touch a one bedroom in a crappy neighborhood on LI for that price..

You have Lake Pleasant not too far. There are water options. I've never been to any of them though..so I wont be much help.

Northern AZ > Phoenix

Phoenix is just too hot for me. And the whole 'dry heat' thing is bull**** after it gets above 100. I like visiting Phoenix in about December or January for a weekend a year, and that's about it.

But, the people are nice from my experiences down there (I might only like being there one weekend a year, but I end up hanging out around there a little more often). Although, in the summer you can't get anyone to stop to say hello if they happen to be outside.

Just remember, urban sprawl + desert = hot as hell.

And Phoenix uses too much water. There shouldn't be golf courses in a goddamn desert, I don't care how much money they bring in.

1) Same kinds of things as anywhere else I suppose. Great hiking, good night-life, lots of lakes for water sports, 300+ days of sun/year if you're the outdoors type.

2) Don't know

3) Being close to work is good because the Phx metro area is so spread out it's 75+miles from north to south and east to west. I personally don't think the traffic is anywhere near as bad as people make it out to be but it's not exactly small-town slow. The fact of the matter is, the population density out here is low due to urban sprawl. Phx metro is darn near the size of Chicago with 1/3 the people. Because of that, traffic density just isn't that bad. Plenty of places are much much worse.
That said, I prefer central phoenix because it feels like it's 10 minutes from everything. From where I live... downtown for a ball game... 15 mins. Airport... 10 mins. Scottsdale night-life... 15 mins. Tempe night-life... 15 mins. The only part about it that sucks is it takes me 45 mins to get out of the city if I want some curvy roads.

4) Don't know. I've had very loud colored cars in the past and didn't have a problem.

5) Umm, yes there's plenty of blondes. People are generally pretty nice but sometimes I think Scottsdale can "out-LA" Los Angeles in terms of shallow, vapid bishes. It has more than it's fair share of muscle bound cro-magnons draggin' their knuckles on the ground. It's a great place to see a 16 yr old in a 360 Modena and I don't believe I've ever seen an SUV without at least 20" wheels.

6) Hell yeah! I moved here 7 yrs ago from the midwest to escape the winters. It can get as hot as it wants and I don't miss the seasons even a tiny bit. When you want to cool off the mountains and their 30 degree temperature difference are 2 hours a way. Low cost of living, great weather, beautiful scenery and a pro football team that is just waaaaay too easy to make fun of. What more could you ask for?

1) If you like going to clubs and bars there's plenty of that available. It really depends on what you're into. I personally don't think there's too much to do, but it's because I'm in college and I don't have time to do any of it . Lots of hiking and some interesting places that are a drive away (Pinetop, Flagstaff, Sedona, Grand Canyon, Mexico).

2) Well, I believe Honeywell is still the Number 1 employer in AZ so you've got that possibility. I'm about to graduate in mechanical engineering and Honeywell is where most of the people go. There are other small firms as well. Aerospace is a pretty good field out here (there's also quite a bit of semiconductor companies). You might want to get a lock on a job before you move out here though (as jobs aren't super easy to come by at this point in time).

3) Tons of nice apartments for super cheap (that's one of the nice things about Arizona, cheap housing). If you go to a nice complex, figure about 700 a month for a 1 br, 900 a month for a 2 br or so. Houses can be found pretty cheap as well. I recently moved into Chandler where you can find small houses in the low to mid 100's, 3-4 br houses start in the high 100's to 300's. It really depends on the area though. This part of Chandler is developing very fast and has become pretty nice (it wasn't considered nice when I moved here in 1990). There's also Ahwatukee that's on the new/inexpensive side. Scottsdale is nice but the prices really start going up.

4) Not that great. There's been a lot of anti-racing stuff happening lately. Then again, if you don't drive like a jerk you'll be fine.

5) Lots of blondes, and lots of attractive ladies. The problem I find out here is attitudes. People (both guys and girls) think they are way more important than they really are and fling a lot of attitude. I personally don't like it down here, but others don't mind. I'm more used to the Bay Area where you can't tell who's a millionare and who's a college student. Here everyone wants to pretend like they are Larry Ellison.

6) If you don't mind the heat, like going to clubs, and can deal with snobby people than come on down. Me personally, I'm outta here.

7) Since it's sunny about 10 months out of the year (at least) there's plenty of time to work on a tan. Plus you can go out to the lakes which are basically tanning beds and places to show off boats (since owning a boat here is otherwise pointless). Plus most houses have pools, and the pool area at apartments are usually pretty "interesting" places (especially if you're around the ASU campus or there are a lot of college kids at the apartment.

PS- I'm Italian too and I will be moving there when I graduate (January 2005). What part are you from?

1) There's plenty to do out here and it's not far from a few places that you might want to go on the weekends like Vegas and California. There are mountains and lakes and clubs, etc.
2) Don't know about this line of work.
3) Nice areas would be N.Phx, Scottsdale, and Glendale/Arrowhead areas.
4) There are many hot cars out here, just drive cool and there shouldn't be any problems.
5) As far as the single people are concerned, you will have no problem with a beautiful people ratio. There are many nice looking/almost fake people out here. I'm sure it's in many ways like L.A....I personally don't know how many evil/golddigging women out here(or men for that matter) As with anywhere you live, if you aren't shallow, you probably won't attract shallow people(for long anyways)
6) I don't know what you're looking for at this point in your life. I know I love it for the life I lead, not the job I have, etc. There's no harm in trying it out though!!

I moved here just before junior high, i grew up in MA and had visited once a year or so, now i visit back east, and i would never move back, it's great to visit, but i'll stay here

1. people complain there isn't alot to do, but they just don't know where to go, there's quite a bit, socially you have alot of clubs and bars taht are club orientated, if thats not your cup of tea but like that occassionaly, there's other stuff like we have 2 or 3 go kart tracks, not the kiddie one's, paintball, target shooting, illegal drag rac.., oh wait never mind that last one, watching theater movies is alot better out here,

you can see two blue WRX's parked butt to nose outside AMC Deervalley 30 and one license plate read MI...... and the other was AW.... Busted! You know who you are

flying lessons (real planes), water sports are actually pretty big out here considering, some friends of mine tried to go every weekend for wakeboarding, lake pleasant is only 30 min from this side of town, there's other stuff too, can't think of any

2. Dunno

3. Check Map (I'll put it up in a bit)

4. Cops know what WRX's are out here, they know they're fast (At least faster tahn hondas and such), one city actually has some WRX cruiser/ chase cars i guess, i've never seen them, on the road, but they know what they can do and they know what their crown vics can do, (two corners and "Buh BYE") if you got a bunch of stickers and you look like another kid in an import than watch your back jack, but if you like like anyone else and you look like someone driving a subaru, then you'll be great, my buddy had a Blue WRX wiht 18" icemetal wheels and dark tint, i drove it alot and never got screwed with, even when i flew by cops, once they saw waht it was and the wheels they're just started lookin for the next honda, he got pulled over twice, once leavin the club, tehy were waitin for people and he got on it, he had a couple but they let him go (he was more than able to drive) and one time in his own neighborhood, because some cop was teachin a rookie and staked out a stop sign where it didn't need to be, and pulled him over for rollin it, even though he did stop, the cop told him "those are nice wheels, are tehy spinners? cause when you stopped they just kept spinnin'", (let him go) as long as you car don't look like you race everybody that pulls up to you and you don't drive like it, you'll be more tahn fine, still probably get less gruff tahn any other state, there's enough WRX's out here that you not like an outlaw

5. Depends on waht part of town your in

6. AZ is the shizzle, i've been around the world 7 or 8 times or so and have driven across this great country and back and stayed in alot of states, i wouldn't live anywhere else (unless i was retired), we have a big prob wiht illegals but it's worth living out here, for me anywho, my lifestyle fits in perfect here

Thanks for the replies people ! I really appreciate it!

I will be planning a "reconnecence" trip in August of this year, most likely coming out there the second week around the 14th, my intent is to check out as much as I can of the area ( Yes I’m choosing August = the hottest part of the year, because if I can deal with it then, I’m good to go ….This is what I did in West Palm Beach , & I love it! ….that city is on my list too )

Turbo2ltr : I live in Waterbury, grew up in Danbury CT

Fhgwhgads : I’m originally from Bari Italy : My whole family besides my parents is still there ! …. I go back every other year for a month

I am not knocking AZ in anyway.... it is a nice state.. but...

I am 24, from Chicago

I am a Dj and club goer... not into boring bar scene.. but the clubs out here suck Nightlife is NOTHING.. and more outdoorsy things to do than anything.. On a fun scale.. I would say..use your weekends to go to LasVegas or LA...

The weather is beautiful.. until you get into about 7 consecutive months of 115 degrees.. which gets old fast... yes it is better than below zero all the time.. but too much of something always gets redundant and old...

There are plenty of jobs out here... AZ is a growing corporate market..

Girls out here are pretty abundant.. I don't like blonds at all... but I do keep my eyes open.. The US is pretty obese as a nation.. but for being as warm of a climate as AZ is... there are just as many overweight non-good looking people as any other city.

Cops are like anything else... schmucks... depends if they are PMS'ing that day they decide to pull your over... but I haven't gotten hassled yet....

I would say.. not to move here if you are a party going, nightlife kinda guy... but I like the hustle and bustle of BIG cities.. ( yes phoenix is BIG.. but not a metropolis ) so I am moving to LA.... has the great weather and the ocean.... as well as nightlife and good looking stuck up people.. heheh...

Hard to say though.. gotta kinda experience things for yourself.. ya know?
