Default Whats with the cladding?

What is the purpose of the cladding? I would guess that it originated as a way to prevent rust in fenders, rocker panels, etc. and to prevent door dings, but it seems to have spread like a fungus. Is there painted or unpainted metal underneath? Could some of it be taken off and the metal painted? And...why are there two different blacks on an '04 Turbo? I assumed they couldn't get the cladding to look like the metal after it was painted, but then I wonder how they were able to put together a monotone blue?

Hey,
I own an 03 mystic blue-monotone. It looks beautiful. I accidentally...bumped...the ladding off when i ran over a stump. I just tapped the palstic back onto the body w.o problems. On mine, it is painted the body colour. I guess the other colours have the main colour underneath too. There are also holes in door panels with plastic screws or sumthing holding the cladding on. I dont mind the cladding. Its not as ugly as some pontiacs.

Default Black Baja Turbo

The black Turbo is actually Black Granite Metallic and Onyx Pearl. The top color is black with Red metal flake mixed in, the bottom is sort of a light graphite grey. I love the combo.

Originally, the body cladding would always be silverstone metallic. The idea being that when the cladding was damaged, it could be replaced without having to paint-match. but too many people rightfully griped about it and now we have more choices. I still wish that WR Blue Pearl monotone would have been offered.

My kids call it purple beach car I didn't like the cladding first, but now I'm kind of glad as I seem to ding a lot (kids fly the door open and bam!). Bike seasn is starting, so I'll sure drop my bike several times. Plastic doesn't seem that bad when it happens...

Default Shouldn't Dent

Well, it should take a pretty good beating. Each car I've had with rocker panel cladding has never dented unless beaten hard enough to bend the panel beneath it. As for how easy is it to scratch and how durable will the paint be to rocks and road debris has yet to be seen.

I don't know for fact, but I think the paint on plastic (i.e., bumper and cladding) can lose its clear coat quicker if you don't wax it periodically. I usually neglect waxing my bumper and the surface gets rougher than the rest of the car. So, my advice is to wax the plastic as well as Baja is covered with plastics (like Saturn).

Absolutely. My Jeep is a Limited model with the painted cladding and what made it look the worst was it sun blistered from a lack of wax , so keep up on the whole car! Painted plastic can be more suceptible to flaking off easier, at least the BS repainted stuff on the Jeep is. If anything, I'd put more work into the cladding since that's what wil take the most wear and tear from the road and from other cars' doors.

your more likely to crack it then dent it.. just like the satruns... they're dent proof.. but up here when in the winter it's -30 degrees they still don't dent.. they just shatter.. but the stuff on the subaru's is stronger... becaredull with the scratching though.. it will gouge pretty easily

Default Kinda like a Vette, eh?

Yeah, my dad always used to shut the doors to his old Vette rather gently in the winter (upper MI) for fear of causing serious damage to the body. God bless plastics

Yeah I know, the old man once in a while took the '71 Stingray out on some days where it just should have stayed indoors. Tragic, just tragic. Not as tragic as when the kid he sold it to put the nose into a tree, though.

has anybody thought about replacing anything with cladding to legacy parts? therefor making it look like a hopped up legacy pick-up?

I don't think even the GT wagon has any side cladding. I think Hatake had had pulled his off and said that it made the truck look too narrow, not to mention, the Baja has an additional 6" or so of rear overhang.

I've looked at it and I think the front door and fender cladding could be changed if you replace the front bumper cover. It all goes wrong when you get to the rear bumper cover. I't doesn't look like the tailgate would open all the way with the Legacy or Outback parts.

well everything from the bed forwards can be swaped with legacy/outback... and i'm sure with some modifaction the rear end could be "de-cladded" even if it ment just body-filling the holes

some of you photoshopers give it a go!!
here's a picture to attempt with.. it may be at too much of an angle though
