Default Ring and Pinion swap - Do it yourself?

I consider myself hands on. I'm setting up for a 6MT swap, and I've ordered a 3.90 gearset for the R160. I've read through the service manual on disassembling the diff, and its kinda got me spooked. the procedure is full of "Service Tools" used to insert bearings etc.

I'm wondering if anyone here has done a ring and pinion swap themselves? If so, I'm looking for some tips, and an idea of how hard it really is.

If this is something I need a service shop to do, how $$$ am I looking at?

I had a local driveline shop (Bill's Driveline in Manchester, NH) do it for $200. There's some shimming and such that should be done to get the best longevity out of the differential, that's best done by someone experienced.

But it's certainly possible on your own... I just wouldn't reccomend it unless you've done driveline teardowns before.

If you have a good driveline shop near by it may be in your best interest to let them do it for you. I have done gear and axle service for 28+ years, it is not difficult, but a 1st time install... one oversight and you get a do-over$$$$ Mike.

Thanks for the advice. I've found a driveline shop to shorten my driveshaft, so I'll ask them about doing the gear swap too.

I have heard special tools are needed for subie diffs. I called around my area before and no one wanted to touch them
