Bought a brand new Forester XT and have about 1,200 miles since new. Now that my engine has been properly broken in I'd like to change the oil. I'm having a heck of a time figuring out what oil filters fit the XT. I'd like to use a Mobil1 filter but can't find any fitment guides. Same for Bosch Premium. Neither of the mfg. web sites show fitment guides. Anyone know if either of these brands fit and what there part # is?? If not, what brand are you using on your XT? Thanks for any help. I'm going to post in the Newbies & FAQ section also. Would STI owners know; do they use the same size oil filter?

WOW! Great thread, Peaty. Put that in my bookmarks. I knew I should have come here before wasting time driving to auto parts stores. Thanks.

This is only my opinion, but I have found that if you are changing your own oil you are best using the OEM oil filter, for the simple reason is it makes it harder for them to give you a hard time in the event of warranty issues.
The difference in cost between aftermarket filters and Subaru filters will not amount to a hell of a difference cost wise over the life of the warranty. There may be better filters but the bottom line, if Subaru are covering the engine for 60K they are not going to put a crappy filter on it. Pat ![]() |

While I agree OEM filters are good, that's what I've been using so far. But unless subaru gives you the filters free they can't say anything about an aftermarket filter. I have a couple WIX and Purolator Pure One filters on the shelf too for when I finish the case of OEM one's I have.
Subaru like any other company will have filter makers bid on contracts to be a supplier. They will compromise between the cost of the filter and how well it's made. I've been in R&D for 20 years and I've also developed stuff for other companies to brand as their own. I have to say the bean counters usually win. |

Yep, I totally agree with what you are saying. Sears is a classic example of that, just about all of their stuff is made by somebody else and branded Craftsman or Kenmore.
I have also found that Subaru of Canada tends not to be as consumer friendly as Subaru of America. For instance SOA. has My Subaru.Com as a sort of incentive for do it yourselfers SOC. on the other hand has no such thing. And I will also agree that there are better filters out there and in the end the onus is on the carmaker to prove that something you did caused a specific failure, but, who really needs the hassle. A Mobil-1 M-104 crossreferences to the NA Foresters.
SubieGal noted that the NA-style xxxx060 filters are fine to use in that thread as well, and the M104 cross-references to it. |

I put an M-104 on our 02 OB I'm thinking it will be ok on an NA forester (I have pics of the filter in the Legacy section of Scoobymods) But at almost 12 bucks I don't know if it's that much better than a Pure One by purolator.
