I was at Borders yesterday and was browsing through some car magazines. I was just amazed by how much Mitsubishi is trying to relate and portray the Mirage here in the US with the powerful EVO.
I mean...C'mon!!! I know that they are somewhat related (just maybe the shape of the car)but not even close! Some might also think that SOA is also doing the same thing with our Impreza's but at least the RS's have enough punch!

What's the highest end Mirage engine they make, and what are the stats? And how upgradeable is it?

I wonder if this has been done a lot. There are at least 2 Mirages up here in Gurnee, IL with body kits and some kind of engine upgrades. My wife's car is a 170hp Mercury that has a pretty decent pull with her crappy V6, and these two Mirages blow her car off the line with regularity. Her car isn't as fast as an RS because of weight and FWD slippage, but the Mirages that I've pulled up against I would have bet could have easily taken an RS. Then again, they are just FWD right? Or have they made AWD Mirages in the states?

I don't think they have AWD, but man I'd love to do just the whole body thing and make it look like a EVO. We saw some pics before of a "EVO" in Vancouver I thought. Looked great.

On problem with the AWD DSM -> Mirage upgrade is that the real lancer has the 4G63 mounted 180 degrees opposite and has a MUCH better transmission and differentials.

Mirage and Evo share the same body. There are front wheel drive Lancers in Manila, Philippines, which are called Mirages in teh States. The Lancers in Manila look identical and can easily be confused with the Lancer Evolution - until the front wheel slips and keeps slipping, then you know it's just a better looking Mirage.

Hey Snoopy, i was in the Philippines about a year ago and followed a full Rally prepped EVO (w/traffic of course)...heading towards the Raceway in Subic...surprised me a little to see such a powerful car there.

You can't put the GSX motor and drive train in a newer Mirage. The motor and tranny in an Evo are mounted 180 degrees. You can put one in an older Mirage, but it's still alot of work. If you could, I probably would have already done it.

I know a fellow who is trying to turn his Mirage into a Lancer. Right now its very riced out because it has a body kit, and a bunch of Lancer stickers all over. I drove around once and the car is super slow, nothing like a 100 hp engine
. I'm sure minivans could take the car. He is saving up for a turbo engine conversion with an Eclipse though. |

dada21,
Here are the stats for the mirage: "For it's Top of the Line 1.8 Liter Engine" Horsepower: 113@5500 Torque: 116@4500 I don't think you would gain much through mods with this engine! |

Up at the Maine Forest Rally, one of the rally geeks had a Mirage with an Evo wing and--get this--bright yellow painted rear brake drums behind his 17" wheels. I hope he was suitably embarassed when he saw one of the many real Evo's, but probably not.

Well, that's not quite fair. Maybe if there was a FWD 1.8L Impreza that was all riced up it would be comparable. Most of the Imprezas I saw up there were pretty tasteful.
What amazes me is how some of those guys with 17" wheels got into the woods. I ran the rally on 15" heat treated wheels with reinforced rally tires and I broke (not dented->destroyed!) two rims. |

What the heck are you guys smoking. Mirages are NOT AWD and haven't been since the early '90s. Doesn't the Evos have active yaw control like the Skyline GT-R. Also, doesn't the Evos have twin turbocharged KKKs? There seems to be too much difference between the US and Japan models to consider that a simple engine translpant is the only major difference.

Wrong. The EVO has a single turbo with a titanium alloy turbine.

Okay, I was wrong. The Evo has 1 turbo. Thats still 1 greater than the U.S. Mirage.

Okay, here's the deal with the Mirage/Evo...
Apparently, someone really wanted their Mirage to be an Evo (This was several years ago) and hired TAD motorsports to do the conversion (They are a rally shop that specializes in DSM cars). Tad managed to do the job for the customer, but swore that they would never do it again - just too many problems in the conversion. IIRC they had to do some stretching of the wheelbase and other thing to make the job really tough. Now, I used to sell Mitsus (1997-1998)and I really think that the Mirage is a nice little car. I though that it completely blew away the NA Eclipses (not a huge feat in itself) but for the price (Then, about $16,000) I though (and still do) that it was one of the most under-rated cars out there. The acceleration was not bad, the handling was remarkably crisp with repsectable amounts of body roll. Granted, I am not going to head out there and buy one, but if you were thinking about a neon or escort (sorry, focus) I think that the car should at least be considered. Down side? There ain't nuthin' in the way of mods for that car, save for the ricey Evo body kit. You will be damned to the 113 hp for the rest of your life, short of a swap with the Mirage/Colt turbo of old (and they are very, very rare). And (sorry, not being a sexist, just delivering the facts) I never sold one to a male... Go Scooby! Mike |

Actually, SCC had one of the older Mirage turbos with an upgrade to the Eclipse turbo. As far as expense goes on doing a newer Mirage with newer Eclipse turbo motor and awd chassis, all you need is a high mileage mirage and donor eclipse that has been wrecked or something. So right there for both you are talking maybe 16k, then some time on your hands and a garage to work in. A friend of mine some of you may know, Ray with the MY98 RS blue with Minnam stage II, has a special little Hyundai Scoupe with some work under way by the way of the conversation here. So it is possible, just takes some time

Ok guys let's just set the record straight here as I once had a '97 Mirage. If your looking at buying a Civic, don't the Mirage is better, NOW it has so many standard options, true is has like 7 less hp then the Civic (We're not taking Si, the LS Mirage was 113hp), but it's about 250 pounds lighter. I THINK it the whole car drives smoother then the RS. And on the plus side, there are Lancer body kits out there for it. There are a few parts out there for it, heck I think even Minamme(Sp?) makes a Turbo kit for it. If you have the current issue of Super Street they list all the parts out there for it. I am a Male and I bought the car, all my friends thought it was pretty sweet too.
Oh and the SCC thing that you were thinking of, was most likely, a old Turbo Mirage that did an Eclipse engine swap. Get this, I was actually planning this for my Mirage when the article came out! But since someone had already done it, even though it was a old Mirage, I didn't want to do it anymore. |
