Question Rumors Rumors Rumors.. (MY'02)

I have heard rumors from websites and magazines that the WRX styling for the US will be a "tad different". I don't know what they exactly mean by a tad.

I think they said on one auto magazine (not C&D or R&T) website that the styling was so unpopular with the people Subaru polled that they wanted a new stylng scheme for the US.

Note that this is a RUMOR. Anybody have extra fuel to add to the fire?

Tim

Can you post links to these websites?

As for my opinion, I doubt Subaru will want to spend the money for a redesign in the US. Think about this, the US isn't the only ones complaining about the new front end, everybody is. Why would they only choose the US for this redesign. Especially since they consider the WRX a gamble in the USA. Why not make a redesign for Japan, Brittan, or Australia where the car has already achieved cult status.

I know the local Subaru dealership is pissed at being stuck with 2 of the new WRX's. So much infact that they have stated they won't be getting anymore MY02 WRX's in the future. The ones that are on the lot now they can't exactly return so when or if they ever sell them, they will be the only ones they deal with. I'm waiting to see what SOJ's sales figures are for the first quarter of the fiscal year. There's bound to be some mention of the new WRX in the press release. Of course they can blame the first few months on start up costs of new models.

I highly doubt they would redesign a car just for North America. Look at a lot of the import cars that are available now. They usually send us the limp models with older/crappier parts... why would they invest more money in redesigning just for us?

Also, why would a dealership be pissed that they would be "stuck" with the new WRX's? For a lot of people the new styling is growing on them and they might eventually like it. If its coming with the Turbo and a reasonable price tag I'm sure those are gonna sell!!

Kost - I believe that N/A is located in Japan... the SOJ comment reinforces my thought on that - Subaru of Japan...

I hope that here in the states we have the same problem though - I wouldn't mind getting a WRX for Invoice or below

I could deal with the styling for that

i have also read, somewhere on this board, that we're going to get last year's Japan WRX for 02. so basically, the same body style as now, with WRX parts... now that would be sweet.

If you want the car then just get on a plane and come over to Japan. You'll need a connecting flight to Aomori Japan. It's kind of amusing to drive by there on my way to work and see them still sitting there. This probably won't happen in the US though. Especially since the US hasn't gotten a turbo model in the past. Many people will run out to buy one simply because it has a turbo or because it has the WRX badge. I can honestly say that if Subaru doesn't redesign it this year there will likely be changes made on the MY03 version. Subaru said they would be willing to lose the sports cars fans by going more up scale. I think they might have not realized how many people that effects. Poor sales in their own home market will be a little hard to explain to the stock holders.

so, the new style isn't cutting it among the existing WRX drivers..

That'd be horrible if the new body style marks the downfall of the WRX as a global sports car..

imagine if the rest of the world forgets about it and get's Evo's..

and the only country left showing any intrest in the WRX is the US.. just because it's a WRX and we never had it before.

Maybe Subaru planned to make the US version different. Maybe they thought from the beginning that the US would not like the round lights. Look at the Integra. The US version and Japanese version have different front ends. I can see them changing the front end since the US wont be getting the same type of lights.

But it's real easy to change the lights on an Integra because you just change the front fascia. On the MY02 WRX, the bulge from the lights is carried down the fender like the E-class Benz. The fenders & hood would look pretty silly with square lights.

I can't imagine anyone being able to cost-justify 2 sets of dies(3 each for each panel and any extra dies related in mfg.). That's some serious money for this class car!

Actually the Integra front end chance isn't as simple as changing the front bumper. The hood and front fenders are different as well. I think the radiator support has to be altered to work too.

I don't think Subaru would do a different front end since they aren't as big as Honda and don't have as large a market in the US like.

Tim -
The new Sport Compact Car also wrote about this. One of their sources hints that the spy shots with the rectangular headlights might be the U.S. model (or something along those lines). The unveiling is only a few months away, so we'll soon find out.

Actually all those spy pics with square headlights were just the round ones covered up with some painted cardboard that was taped on. After we learned that the headlights were round, we took a look at the square pics again. You could just barely make out the points where they had taped on the square covers to fool everyone.

I saw the 02 on Autoword magazine the other week. It was a four door with the oval head lights, and it it a very attractive looking car. That picture is the best one I have seen, the car styling is balance and consistence, not like the current one. I will buy one, and I hope other people do not like it, so I do not have to pay sticker price!

hehe, i dig the name.

i could forsee some minor changes to the front end in the next few MYs, but not imediately and only if they don't sell well.

Ahhh...the extra "L". I found that out too late in my first account and I kinda left it that way...

Can't you just see old Tom B. in a Suby WRX the color matching his jacket? Goldberry riding shotgun of course.

I've been in Tokyo for over a week now and I have seen EVO's, Current Gen WRX's, B4's (VERY nice) and Skylines (REALLY NICE!), but not one single new age Impreza. The really popular thing here seems to be these Wagon/Van hybrids...
