Default Unknown problem...help

my MY00 2.5 RS drives, but when driving around town (speeds around 25 mph), it acts like its not getting power to the wheels, it shifts to the lower gear, gets speed back up, then shift back to the higher gear, slows, and does this process over again.

If you floor it, no problem...but if you want to keep at driving around town speeds, then it continues to change gears....

Any ideas?

space

hate to say it but sounds like tranny slippage? tranny issues to me...

something you may want to have inspected by a Subaru tech.... or you can just wait, it will get a lot worse before it goes completely....

hard to diagnose w/out driving the car
but yeah.. best guess is tranny 'issue"

95% sure it's tranny issue. My old 86 Aries did similar thing before the transmission went on it.

How's your O2 sensors? I have an manual and when front sensor went bad I could barely drive the car. It kinda surged ,then would cut out, then surge, If it felt like it was going to die I could floor it and get back up to traffic speed, but as soon as I let off the gas it would act up again.

It did this for ten miles before throwing the CEL for a bad sensor. IT was kind of a catastophic instant failure. I have read that when most subies need to have their O2 changed it is much more gradual and throws the code before it becomes undrivable.

Certainly alot cheaper than tranny work.

00RScoupe....that sounds like it would be close to what it is....hopefully that is what it is...i know when I was replacing the turbos the o2 sensors were caked with oil....that could be the problem...hopefully...

The tranny shift good....but it could also be slippage...

keep the ideas coming....hopefully the car will be sold and I won't have to worry about it...but still ideas are good...

Thanks,
space

never heard of an O2 sensor causing a car to shift on it's own

That sounds like the tranny, probably not the o2 sensor. As far as I know, if the O2 sensor was bad, it would just throw a CEL, wouldn't affect how your car shifts.

How many miles are on the car?
What kind of driver are you?

Trannys can only take so much abuse if you drive it hard, thats why I ask.

there is 70K on the car....the CEL just came one on friday....and for the 40K I had the turbo on, I ran it pretty good.....Not full throttle 24/7, but occasionally I would get on it...

Anyhow, It doesn't matter now, I sold the car to a guy in Maine, sold it as is and told him that it could be anything...

Again, thanks for the help..
