Hi all. Not sure about all the details, but the "mega-tuner" was there. They had two cars, one of them (maybe both) were turbocharged and they were all "top secret" until after the rally. The team was called Knight, or Rally Knight. Both cars crashed out and didn't finish the event. Can't win if you don't finish.

There were several Subarus - some real WRXs including the McGreers from Canada. Nice car!!

On a personal note, my car (1992 Volkswagen GTI) did. We finished 40th overall, 7th in group 2, and even passed a Subaru on stage. Unfortunately my 2.5 RS is still a couple of years away from being a rally car.

BTW - Prodrive had representatives observing the rally. That is excellent news for us.

Later,
Charlie

PS. My car is on the link above, pictures img097.jpg and img117.jpg. Thanks for taking the pictures...

Question

Hey csprigg, which car was Lonnie driving? He busted a Raceline alloy a couple of weeks ago when they were shaking down the green car... If Raceline doesn't need it, he's hanging the spoked portion on his wall.

edit
oopsie. forgot they were sending that one off to the paint shop. I think I sat in the #304 car.

Cool

Lon Peterson had just gotten off the plane from a 30 hour flight from CA to MN and so had co-driver Bill Guzman. Neither had more than 12 hours total sleep for the previous 3 days(I know, I see a lot of violins coming out)and the same with Nick the other co-driver (they were all on the flight from hell). With the sending unit from their terratrip out and the cars just lightly tested, it was amazing they were only 1:45 behind the leader and Lon was "taking it easy" to learn the car. The other car driven by John Ryther was just 300' from the end of stage one, he found one of the rare jumping trees and he hit it. There was less
damage to his car than when I hit another car at 15mph! They built it strong! Rally Knight will be back strong. See ya in Minnie Sota

Thumbs up

Hey - No problem guys! - I had a lot of fun taking those pictures, and watching you guys go around corners sideways!

Good Luck to all the competitors in their next rally! I've personaly seen all of the top drivers, got to talk to most of the Subaru drivers, and met even more of the drivers / co-drivers online! - What other nationally televised sport can you do that!? ProRally is awesome!

Thanks!
Kris

Digital_Boy,

Sorry, I'm not sure which one was Lon. I talked to the team owner at Parc Expose and he said that he owns these two cars plus (I think) he said he has five other 2.5 RSes.

They seem like they're really into doing good things with the North American 2.5 and I wouldn't be surprised to see lots of good products coming from them soon. He said they want to make sure everything is well tested before they release anything. I can't blame them.

I wish them luck, since we can always use another high-quality tuner. Plus I love to see all the Sube's in ProRally. I can't wait until I can run mine...

So who the hell's the tuner? The question is still unanswered. If they're not goint to tell until they actually win, we could be waiting a long time.

Sorry, I thought I answered. Their team is Knight racing, owned by Knight Steel. They've got a company called "Leading Edge" doing a lot of the fabrication, I think.

That's all I know. He said to keep an eye out for Rally.com when it comes on-line.

So how much trouble do I get in if I tell? My local shop(Performance Race Engineering) told me about them and what they were/are developing about 3 months ago. PRE also stated that they were going to get some of their first "products", once available. Unfortunately, due to their[PRE] stupidity, negligence, and hard-headedness(sp?), I will never go there again. I, unfortunately, don't know what the latest scoop is on these "products". Just to drive everybody nuts, the pictures do, in fact, show who it is... =P
[EDIT] doh! beat me to the post

From what I gathered the Leading Edge company has been using and building Subaru engines for uses in sand rails, etc. They have claimed to make big power from small motors. I hope they are right.

funny, I think I was standing right beside Knight Racing drivers (three blue crowns on white field, right?) while taking pictures on the last stage.

We had a small conversation and apparently, one of the drivers (can't remember his name) one year had enough points to claim overall SCCA ProRally championship. However, he didn't get it because he never registered that year for nationals, only for divisional competition.

When they said that they rallied their new RS, I thought "cool, another Subaru team", without realizing that they were actually "the mystery shop".

Some other side notes from my trip to Rumford:
I-95 traffic sucks
the town looks like a cold war era filmset, eerie and calm. But they do have fantastic scenery out there.
the Polish Rally Team (from Chicago?) had huge presence.
I took a bunch of rolls worth of pictures, will try to post the better ones before the weekend (a weblink to follow once done).
I saw a soviet (well, Russian, but still of Soviet era design) rally car in America! Unfortunately, it wasn't the "special rally" model, but a regular Lada coupe that can be bought new in Toronto for ~$7,000 USD. For the curious minds here's Lada rally car: and here's the model that actually rallied and finished too!!!

check out the specs of the production car http://www.vaz.ru/vaz/2108.html (use altavista's babelfish page to translate to English http://babel.altavista.com/translate.dyn)
Did I mention that traffic on I-95 sucked as it always does?

We have arrived today from Maine via the semi and have had a long time to think of a response to all the debate. First this is the first outing for both cars other than normal testing. Car #379 was not tested and upon closer inspection the left front bearing had seized just prior to the off. Car #304 driven by Lon Peterson had the clutch fly apart at 130 mph on stage 5.
The cars are already torn down and will be quite ready for Minnesota. Mega-tuner is a bit premature we have been racing for some 20 years and alot can happen in a season. These cars are american spec and will stay that way. No exotic super items from the boys across the pond in either direction. This as you know is very difficult to design, fabricate and test with no failures. After all we are doing this so that all of us can have here in the USA supercars at a affordable price. This does not come easy nor cheap. Parts will be availble when they are rally tested with no failures. So far motors, suspension, front pushbar and engine electrical sytems have passed the test. Failures to date are driver-me and one clutch. For no support of any kind we designed and built two cars capable of racing in the top ten, shipped everything to Maine and back supported ourselves at service and made it to the start line. This is not easy and we all hold regular jobs. A truly independent team should be applauded for making a two car showing to do battle with the big guys. Sorry if the paint scheme is not to your liking as the cars where already painted silver when it was discovered that many cars where painted silver. Have to different in some way. Landing ppg as a sponsor will allow me to entertain different schemes. Send them to me I am happy to look them over and present them to the owner. Thanks Randy for being there during the race your help was most appreciated. JR
