Post The even newer 190hp Celica

http://www.topgear.beeb.com/content/...003/index.html

Yep the RS has another car now to look out for. Toyota is going to release a 190hp version of the new Celica. That makes it in the same class as the ITR. Give the Top Gear article a read.

I'm pretty sure thats just their version of the GTS. I think they only had the 140hp GT released there before. USA's had the 180hp GTS from the beginning. They probably got 10 extra hp from less emissions or something.

Why not, the mockup was only $500,000.

There is a TRD version of the GTS which adds a high-flow cat and muffler, stiffer suspension, and a bunch of body moulding. They claim that the exhaust adds 14hp.

I have read that they have a habit of eating engines when run at high RPM. They seem to handle very well though, and weight is reasonable.

Unhappy

I read a write-up on the TRD Celica, and it was SLOWER than the stock GTS form 0-60 and 12 mile.

Yea, the GTS has a tendency to destroy itself. Apparently its not too hard to miss shift. Like missing 5th and hitting 3rd, or god forbid miss 6th and hit 2nd. When that happens, the engine will shoot way up past the rev limiter and do some very bad things to itself. Its not so much of a problem in everyday driving, but in circuit racing they rarely finish the race. Seriously, in the Motarola Cup, there were two GTS's racing at the beginning. They finished very few races, and had a big box of destroyed heads, pistons, and valves at the end.

FYI, the 500hp prototype celica uses the 2.0 l turbo from the previous MR2. Thats a strong engine, they use the same block for the pikes peak tacoma.

hey, the engine used in that celica was actually the 2.0 liter I-4 used previously used in the Celica All-Trac. turbocharged, square-bored 16v...the awd was also taken and adapted from the old celcia all-trac to the millen celica...

im not sure if the engines were the same in the mr2 and the celica at one point, put im positive the engine was from an older celcia

thanks

The Celica All Trac used the MR2's engine too.

"yeah the millen celica was a one-time only project... 400HP and AWD"

Funny how when people want to make a car better they almost always add AWD... Hmmmm... Maybe someday the rest of the car industry will wake up, but then again, we'd loose our edge.

i'm pretty sure since toyota is dropping out of the WRC that there is no way a new GT4 (All-trac just sounds lame) will grace our roads again. maybe with the reintroduction of the Z and RX cars, ye ole supra will return, maybe with AWD that would be a neat pipe dream.

I just couldn't imagine the new Celica a WRC car. I know they dropped out but this new Celica just looks fragile compared to the old one. It looks like the first hole it would hit the drivers will be saying "Uhm we just lost the front right fender...wait up make that both fenders". It's a fine design and all but just have to be very careful not to blow you engine up, that's all.

haha, that's funny you mention a WRC celica. I have one on GT2! I don't remember which race I got it from but I think it was one of the endurance races. 400 hp AWD. It is one of the best AWD cars on the game.

yea i think the new celica seems more like a track car now.. besides that, it seems like the current WRC corolla hatchback blew away the old WRC celica, so maybe toyota just didnt need a heavier rally car with virtually the same powertrain?

Yeah, driving the new Celica WRC car on GT2 makes me wish they would re-enter. The car looks cool. Who says rally cars can't have an "aero" design? Lancia Stratos?

But Toyota's F1 plans will make that impossible. Don't worry, though. I predict that most of the big manufacturers will pull out of F1 in a few years. It's too expensive to do and not win.
