Post Never judge a book by its cover.

We've seen the "spy pics" of the "New Impreza". We've heard endless arguments as to whether or not they're fake. To me, that's academic.

What I find incredibly disappointing is the reaction of the many so-called Impreza fans here, who seem to be more than willing to judge and condemn a car based solely on its cosmetics. So what if the next Impreza doesn't meet with your own personal aesthetic standards? Are you really so shallow that all you care about is what it looks like?

Do the words "incredible performance", "amazing handling", "AWD turbo", "muscle car spanking", "German car eating", "you have no idea what just blew your doors off", "rally car for the road" not exist in your dictionary? That's what I want from this car. If it isn't a 220+ horsepower AWD turbo with WRX-quality handling, then okay -- Subaru screwed us, and I'll be pissing and moaning like the rest of you, because while I might be able to live with ugly, I certainly ain't living with slow.

But if this Scoob does deliver all the performance we're hoping for, I don't care what it looks like from the outside. If it is indeed the car we're seeing in the pictures, then that's sad. But I can live with it. And if you can't, then don't worry. I'll be making your life as easy as possible by always giving you what I feel is the best view of my car -- the rear end -- and ensuring that you won't be looking at it for long.

And while you may tell me, "You've an ugly car", I'll happily reply, "Yes. But at least I get its point".

It's a car, not a person...

The car that I drive must look good. It doesn't have to be the best performing car on the planet, but it has to be at least respectable (which is how I consider the current 2.5RS). But it has to look good (which the current 2.5RS is).

Why would you want to drive a ugly car? Who cares if it can to 11 second 1/4's if it looks dumb? There's this crazy guy named Gus that's modded a 1989 Plymouth Acclaim to do 12 second 1/4 miles...would you want to drive around town in it though? I highly doubt it...

For me, it's half looks and half performance...if it utterly fails in either department it's not worth getting...

Isn't it just as disconcerning to buy something based on the name WRX and company loyatly? For years we all asked for the WRX and maybe possibly a STI edition. What did we get? A UK turbo with 220hp. Its still not a WRX. Yes it has the EJ20. It doesn't have all the STI added parts. Why would buying a car based on looks be bothering to you. Isn't that why most of us bought the RS to begin with? Its not like we bought it for the high hp. For those who think yah its a factory and a warranty. Try to make event the slightest mod to it and see what happens. Good bye warranty. Oh you've got a point about it being a turbo AWD. However don't expect it to last any longer when you launch the car hard. You can break an STI just as easy. To call people who care about asthetics shallow is based on what? So I guess you removed your rear wing, hood scoops, front bumper, side skirts and 16in rims when you bought your car? AWD covers up for alot of things but like it was already pointed out, other companies are releasing AWD vehicles. So what if Mazda does build that twin turbo AWD 626? Does that mean you'd not buy one cause your a true Impreza fan? Everything plays into buying a car and not just what it can or can't do. Oh and just because its a psuedo WRX doesn't mean your the fastest thing on the road. You may be building the car up too much in your mind. Hopefully the US will eventually open up to the grey market.

Lets not kid ourselves here. Looks matter. Idealistic school boys have a harsh lesson in life when they're crush chooses the good looking guy who he knows is a prick. Let's take the lesson of the RAT and the CHIPMUNK both rodents, both can spread disease but the cute tail makes all the difference. That mitzubishi commercial was right. We all want to have the power to prove our "little impreza" worthy of respect from muscle car enthusiasts. Isn't it more fun in a damn good looking car?

So Jaz, I guess I can assume that if you get a car with bent body panels, faded paint, and holes in it you're not going to say anything right? Looks do matter. Any car, especially a performance car, must be taken seriously. There's no point to exhilerating performance if everywhere you go people are laughing at you. Alright, you shouldn't dump a good car just because it doesn't fit your standards, but that MY02 is pure, untainted ugly in it's most concentrated form. It just looks too damn cutsy to be taken seriously as an actual vehicle. I wouldn't even but a Hot Wheels that looked like that. Why is the reaction of Impreza fans so negative? The Impreza looks like it should be named All Wheel Drive Bad Ass. The MY02 looks like it should be named Jiggly Puff. Subaru screwed us all. Are the people here really that shallow? Yes. We're human beings, we can't help it. If something's ugly or distasteful, we hate it.When was the last time you asked out a girl because of her merit or her good credit background? And I think it also combines with the fact that we all know deep down inside that this is yet another tactic to appeal to the gay and lesbian community, which will eventually earn that car such nicknames as "the gay car"and "screw-butt-ru"(both already exist but are not well known). The cosmeticly similar beetle and neon, hit it off very well with gays. They loved it's cutsy design. That is why these "so-called Impreza fans" are pissed. This new Impreza is just too damn ugly to bear.

Hmm some of the coolest cars ever came in UGLY packages. Try the RS200. The evolution model held the record for fastest production car 0-60 for years and may still for all I know. Its still UGLY. How about the Pug 205 Turbo 16? UGLY but cool. The Nissan Pulsar is long on ugly, but still cool.

Also anything that makes a car less noticable to cops/theves/riceboys/insurace companies is a good thing. So if no morons buy it because it looks cool, we will all benifit from less hassle by the police, a better owner rep, and the insurance companies will have less boneheads racking up numbers in the claim statistics.

Lets face it guys, beauty is in the eye of the beholder too!

XT6 Wagon has hust denounced the RS200 as ugly. Me? I think it is one of the most gorgeous car designs I've ever laid eyes on.

6R4 Ok, it's never going to be aesthetically pleasing but it has a brutal attraction that states "Don't even try, I'll bury you".

I think this is where the attraction lies with the Scooby. It's brutal and doesn't make any allowances for the 'accepted' path of car design.

People say "I would buy it even if it was ugly, because it's so capable"

Would you buy it if it looked gorgeous but was very slow, or had no rally history at all?

For me, I'm happy to admit it brings out the kid in me. Big wheels, big skirts, big spoiler, big noise and goes like stink.

blubs (who hates the new look Subaru by the way!)

Somehow, I don't see the MY02 slipping by cops unnoticed. It stands out way too much. Just because it's ugly, doesn't mean it doesn't stand out.

You don't quite seem to get my point, so I'll say it in plain English.

You are judging this car -- AND YOU HAVE NOT EVEN SEEN IT YET.

Nobody here has seen it. And -- most importantly -- nobody has driven it. Yet I'm reading that people have already decided that Subaru screwed us.

That's my point. What I'm trying to say is that for ME, as in "my opinion", I'm going to give it a chance. I'll go test it, and IF (and I emphasize "if", because it seems some of you missed it last time) it delivers what I want (a very fast rally car for the road, that's better than anything else out there), then I'll be VERY interested in it.

If it has bent body panels and faded paint, or is as ugly as an '89 Acclaim, then I take your point. Living with it will be very tough. But I'm going to wait and see what it looks like in the metal and I'm going to test drive it and THEN decide, rather than being judge, jury and executioner based on a couple of pics snapped by an opportunistic dockworker.

That, my friends, is my point.

Dare I hasten a conclusionthat ppl who buys RS too will be interested with the extra body tack ons of Grand Ams and Azteks?
It sure sounded like it. Look fast but drives slow....
I still reserve my judgement until I see it in person and then drive it.... Yup I am sitting on the fence.
I too like Juggly Puff. hehehe....

I'm going to reserve judgement on the new car until I have seen it sitting there in front of me at the dealership right before I take it a spin. And it's quite sad when nobody appreciates a good sleeper any more...do you honestly think anybody gives Gus Mahon's acclaim a second look until it blows their doors off? Incidentally, he also has a turbo caravan that runs 14s. If nothing else, that guy really knows how to make those mopar turbos perform.

I don't care what you say... 220hp is a joke considering what that engine/car is capable of.

Also, if everyone bought cars because of their performance, everyone would be in Geo Metro's or Honda CRX's.

If you want to argue that noone cares about looks, let me nail your car with a sledgehammer a few times and THEN tell me you don't care.

You guys sound like my little brother. When he was a kid he would look at the wrapped boxes under the tree and if he didn't see the box that looked like what he was hoping to get, he through a hissy fit. My parents would put the actual box the toy came in, into another box just to throw him. Stop crying until you walk into a Subaru dealership, kick the tires and take it for a test drive.

I did not buy the RS for looks, I bought it for its combination of AWD, decent acceleration, good handling, short stopping distance, small size, decent milage, good reliabilty record and 4 doors under $20K.
Compared to a Sentra(generic, wimpy and FWD) Jetta (FWD, winmpy with 2.0L, too expensive w VR-6), Civic (FWD, no torque, generic) Grand Am (FWD cant get a 6cyl and a stick, questionable quality), OBS (may as well get the bigger motor & brakes) the RS offerred the most value.

BTW the girls that date the good looking a$$holes wind up in $hitty relationships hiding bruises. If no-one wants the new Impreza it will sit on dealers lots waiting for me to buy it below invoice. Image is hunk'o'cr4p.

None of the above cars are particularly good looking IMHO. At least the Impreza is not a generic Hondyotanissan.

Whether or not image is important or not is a matter of opinion, just as what looks good to one person can look bad to someone else. There are "form over function" people out there as well as "function over form", it just depends on the individual person's traits. God made us all unique

Alright, I suppose I'll give it a chance until I actually see it in real life because it might turn out to be close to half ass decent.(never happened before) But, I can say one thing for 100% sure....that car isn't and never will be a sleeper. That radical, strange, design couldn't go by unnoticed if you sawed the eyes out of the skulls of every human on the face of the earth. Combine that with the fact that Imprezas have never been a poipular car(a Godsend, for sure) and you have a car that will probably cause accidents as it rolls down the street. Maybe that's a good thing, maybe that a bad thing(cops), but sleeper, that is not.(My God. The screw-butt-ru is growing on me. I still don't like it.)

Hopefully the new design will keep all the "wannabe's" away...and just leave us true Subaru enthusiasts behind.

Bye bye wannabe's...have fun in the next "everybody's talking about it so I have to get one for my image" trendy car!

Can't wait for that call from the dealer..."Mr. Opie, your 2002 WRX 5-door wagon just arrived and will be ready for delivery tonight".
