Post New car Choice

Well guys,

I had to buy a car last weekend.(Not entirely a bad thing) The necesity came from my 90 Integra going to that car yard in the sky, so I needed something NOW!

But after test driving an Integra GSR, Subaru Impreza, and Golf GTI VR6 I ended up going with the Golf.

Why? Well, it came down to price and the fact that I found a 99 GTI with every option available for 16500. I also liked the fact that it can really carry four people. That is what ruled out the GSR.

I really wanted the Impreza but none of the DC area dealerships could find a sedan without all the crap (ie, leather, sound system, etc.) and with all the options it was out of my price range. The lowest I could find was 22000!!! Also, no one had a 5speed! All the sedans in the DC area were automatic.

I guess I will have to wait for my wifes car to bite the dust before I can get one of the Impreza turbos.

Yeah, it was used.

I could not find a used 2.5 RS anywhere!!

Also, why don't the rear seats fold down? Utility was a huge factor in choice of cars (this is why the GSR was almost immediately gone) and having the back seats fold down would have helped me to convince my wife to pay the price for a new 2.5.

I am very happy with the GTI(incredible engine) but I still would have rather had the 2.5 RS. Alas, it was not meant to be.

A dealer told me it was for safety reasons.
People involved in rear collisions had been thrown forward in seats that fold down, due to a less solid attachment at the top, there.
Which I suppose is viable...

But I also hear (from folks here) that the folding seats were discontinued to cut costs, along with a locking gas door and trunk light.

Judging from the price, the GTi is not with the vr6 right? just a 2.0l with GTi trims? Cus I remembered wanting the vr6 but it costs about 30k CDN! More than a freakin' rs!

Just how many miles are on this GTi? If it's a GLX, you got a heck of a deal unless it has like 50,000 miles.

Hey RidinLow, would you be able to post instructions for wrenching your way toward folding rear seats? That's also a big factor for me since I'm a college student who needs cargo room for moving all of my stuff between home and the dorms. That was actually the confirmation that I was going to buy a GS-R, but now that I know that you can make the seats go down in the Impreza...

I must admit, those VR6's sound MEAN with an intake on them. I would absolutely love to get one for a winter car, though I'm not sure what the first year for the VR6 even was (can't spend that much).

Siper,

I hope whoever told you that the passengers got thrown forward was joking. The attachment on the rear deck of a Subaru wouldn't care if the seat were fold down or not!!

I do believe that they would try this in a move to cut costs but how much money do they really save by eliminating this? 5 or 10$? It doesn't make sense to me.

There were three RS's (one 98 and two 99's) for sale in the paper today. And my dealer has a 98 and a 99 sitting on the lot. It's not that difficult to find used RS's around here. Both of the ones on the lot were traded in for new Integras.

Hey Bryan,

Congrats on the new car, sounds like a SWEET deal. What happened to the Integra? Just save those pennies until the 2002 Impreza GT turbo 5-door comes out, to replace the Legend. Hatchbacks rule!

Flanagan,

Just undo the bolts that hold the back seat in. There's two behind where the rear seat passengers' lower legs would go; those take out the bottom cushion. There's another 3 bolts that hold in the back cushion which are exposed when you remove the bottom cushion.

Just leave off the bolts, the seat stays in place just fine.

I'm actually going to build a kit for the RS and the Legacy Sedans to be able to have folding seats once I get my GTL.

Thanks. I do like the car BUT...
It does lack the two things that I REALLY like in the Impreza. Looks and AWD.

The Impreza just looks so cool! and where I live(as RRinDC and Flashboy can attest) it would be really nice to have AWD to even get up my driveway in the winter.

Have a Nice Day?

The dealer told me they had problems with people putting skis inside without securing them. Got in a crash and the skis turned into missiles!! Owch! That story reminded me of Leathal Weapon II!! I think it might have been BS but you never know. I have fold-down seats but it's an older sube.

I wish it were that easy to find a used RS around here!

RRinDC
The Integra got traded in. I just didn't want to put the work into it to get it to where I would have been happy with it.
I will definently have to work on the wife to trade the Legend in on a turbo. Come on out sometime and well go for a spin Or let me know if you are going to get into autoxing. I would love to go.
