You should be able to bring the price down on it. When I bought my first car, I got the extended warranty on it, and was able to talk them down on it. I know if you check out edmunds.com buyers guide, they mention something in there about what you should and shouldnt pay for one.

I'd flog SOA about my salesman not mentioning it to me and to give it to me free, but I'm friends with the guy and he still works there. Personally I'm looking at about 24k/year so who knows. I might just have to worry about problems as they arise.

I just checked out Edmunds.com and went to the link for the Gold and Platinum extended warrantees and they didn't even offer one for 75000mi. It doesn't say anything else about ext. warrantees other than the fact that you can haggle the price down, since they make a ton of money off them.

Just a week ago the dealer tried to sell my GF the extended warranty for, get this, $1900. This they calmed was discounted from the regular price of $2200. Bullcrop!

edit: This was the Subaru "added security" good at all dealers, or any licenced repair shop certified to work on subarus accross the US. It was a 7 year 100,000 mile plan.

i bought that extended warranty. when i bouhgt my 98 back in feb '98. it cost like 850. i can't remember exactly how much. anyway, since then i have had the WHOLE tranny replaced (51,000) FREE, well, expect i paid to put a new clutch in(450 to me). i also had then do work (replace) on the valve covers (100) to me. i have also got all kind of other freebies cause i balme everything on warranty! It was a deal for me, but you have alot of miles on your car already.
did you drive your car hard? if so, get that warranty, for the best price you can. then get everthing wrong on your car to be fixed.

There are a variety of extended warranties out there. Is it an "added security" from Subaru? This warranty is good at ALL Subaru dealerships in the US. Some warranties that dealerships sell are valid only at their dealership, they are called in-house warranties, are usually cheaper than the "added security" plans, cover less, and can have very high deductibles.

Although the cost for an "added security" plan can be substantially more than an "in-house" service contract. The price difference is usually made up for by the fact that if you are out of town on vacation or something and have a problem, you can find a Subaru dealership, not have to worry about calling all around to find out if there are any dealers in the area that honor the other warranty.

What exteneded warranty??? Why would you want that? Then you can't do all the fun mods that void your warranty

Question What's a good price for extended warranty?

I've got a '98 RS with about 39,500mi and my lease is up on November 1st. I'm buying the car on that date, but I'd like to get the extended warranty for 75,000mi. The dealer quoted me a price of $847.00, but can I negotiate it? Is there a site that has info regarding this? I checked Edmunds.com awhile back, but there was just a link to a secondary company that resold them. Can I get it thru subaruparts.com? What did you guys pay for the same ext. warranty?

Thanks in advance!

I signed the loan paperwork to buy my car after my lease ends on Nov. 1. It's a 98' RS and I also got the Added Security bumper-to-bumper warranty for 5/75,000. I've got about 39,200 right now, and I can take it ANYWHERE, not just Sube dealerships. The way it works: take the car in, the repair shop calls Subaru, they give them a credit card number, and they are paid right then. Zero deductable. I think that's worth $850. They showed me a piece of paper outlining all the Extended Warrantees and they were very expensive. They didn't even show prices for $0 deductable, just $50 & $100.
