Post Complaints about my 01 RS

Hopefully there are some fixes, otherwise, I just gotta take the bad with the good. Ok, here they are, not in order;
1. frickn first gear is a pain to get into, especially if the car is moving a slow as maybe 1mph. worse than my crappy stang, or my old saturn. I learned stick on an old (78/79) toyota 1/4 ton pickup. I do not remember having so much problems getting into first.
2. Shifting into 3rd. I have a problem with this. Is there a way (other than a short shifter) to lessen the problem (ok, maybe its learn how to shift)
3. Whenever I have to brake moderate to hard, I can smell the awefull stink of my brakes if I have the fan on (vent or A/C). It smells really bad. For that matter I slipped the clutch trying to launch from a stop, and that smelled even worse. Where the heck did they place the air intake for incabin, behind the engine or the wheels?? I even got the air filter (in cabin), maybe thats the problem.
4. Damn, alarm. First off, the buttons on the fob are raised so, if I bump the fob in my pocket I usually accidentally disarm the car. I can't turn off the audible signal for the arm/disarm. Course until I stop accidentally disarmming the car, I need the damn audible signal. The alarm uses the door ajar light (what idiots!). I close the door, in my garage, and lock them (I'm coming right back in a few minutes). The light inside stays on (I don't like this, same as DRL IMO), and the light for door ajar is on, but no door is ajar, oh yeah, im not running down battery, I just didnt arm the alarm (frickn idiots). Why they hell hook into that visual indicator, if they got the other one??? Maybe I can get the good fobs, without having to get a different alarm system installed (its the factory one). I just opened some alarm booklet and noticed I got the cheap fobs.
5. lots of squeaking. I am always resting my right knee against the plastic center console. This squeaks a lot (not my knee). Sometimes I hear a slight rattling when I have the clutch pedal pushed in for more than a few seconds (hunting for reverse in the morning to get out of garage, reverse is not always easy to find). There is another rattle that just started recently, but I can't seem to find even which corner/side of the car its coming from. Dang, and car only has 1K miles on it.
The rest of the stuff I can deal with; non-functioning hood scoop and vents, lack of power, better suspension, tires, brakes, brake fluid, lubricates, etc. Maybe when I replace brake pads, brake fluid, tranny fluid, some of these problems will be less of a problem.
Any helpful suggestions would be cool.

well the gearing...1st gear has a lockout (i think) so you don't accidentially slam first...the brakes...the cars new..DON'T SLAM ON THE BRAKES it takes time to bed them in. the lights turns off after a few minutes. that's a security measure for you walking away from your car.

didn't you test drive the car????

Anerd,
I think you got the wrong car dude. I also have some gripes about my '01, but All I have to do is take a good look at her, or start pushing her a little hard, and it all fades into the background....

Besides. This is a japaneese sub compact. It is not a bently. Not everything is going to be perfect. Remote? how much other crap do you have in your pockets dude?
1)first gear: It has always been my understanding that if anything 2nd is the slow cruising gear. 1st is just to get you going....maybe i'm wrong....

2)I haven't had a problem with 3rd...

3)Yeah, sometimes she's a little stinky. But I hear that it goes away after a while.

4)Like I said sub compact, not Bently.

Sorry to hear you are having problems. I guess you just have to really love the car to get passes these things....It's a Subaru thing....

yeah, the car is "quirky" to say the least..
kinda rough around the edges.. but it's got a wicked personaility..

I just look at the little things as the personality of the car and try not to sweat them..

I fixed the trunk light issue.. now on to other things..

if you don't take the car out on a backroad and forget all the little "things".. then you got the wrong car..

the RS is a little beast that begs to be tossed and beaten..

if you want a nice smooth car. get a MY00 eclipse.. they are nice and refined.. and don't BEG to be played with..

I take it all in stride.. the good and bad about the car..
nothing will ever make me not love this car.

Responding to 3rd gear issues...

People that complain about shifting into third gear make the shift too complicated! Instead of thing of it as ^, ->, ^, (up, right, up), Just put the palm of your hand at the bottom of your shifter and push up. Not diagonally to the right, just 'UP'. You will notice when the shifter comes out of second, it springs into the middle of neutral, which happens to be directly under 3rd gear. This should help you "Visualize" the shift, and don't worry about it going into first, there is a blocker of some sort that prevents you from slamming into first while the car is moving.

Interesting side note: When your cruzin in 3rd, 4th, or 5th, and you try to move into first and keep constant pressure on it, you will hear a winding up sound and after a few seconds the gear with click into first...Just don't dump the clutch, you might drop more than your transmission

...for liability reasons...

I don't really have any of those problems hehe...New cars smell for the first bunch of miles, my RS more than my Corolla, but it's gone away now. I don't have any squeaks, really (except for my intake which I'm way to lazy to silence with weatherstripping). I have no trouble shifting (sometimes into reverse, but my Corolla was like that, too). My alarm key fob is an annoyance, though...But it's such a minor problem for a car I love so much It's possible your car is just kinda messed up, or needs more of a break in period. Lots of problems go away after you break the car in.

Most of those rattles you can fix yourself. Spray foam for the Door panels works great. The headliner on the bottom of your sunroof might be what your heaing. I have heard lots of complaints about that and that is a simple fix. It snaps off and you tape the outer edges until you fill in the gap between the board and the headliner because that space is what causes the squeek/rattle on bumpy roads. Was your glove box aligned evenly?? Mine wasn't. The dealer will be more than happy to take care of that for you if thats a problem. It is pretty easy to sound proof the car.

thx for the info. I did read up on car (for last 3 years), and I did get in a 15 minute test drive. Maybe I should have tempered my first post with the list of what I like/love, however that would take too long. Basically I tried a old 88 mustang lx. very expensive to get working correcty (power/suspension), I need something that works now. Tried a v6 mustang, worse interior, terrible clutch pedal, no AWD. It great in the dry (rwd), and ok in the rain, but in Tahoe in the winter?? No way am I gonna try that! Looked in the civic si (too many of em), but I got tired of FWD cars (had 2), especially aggressive corning. Which brings me to some of the main reasons I picked a RS. I wanted more than 124hp, 122tq, I wanted better cornering and better control. I also wanted a new car I could afford. The only other car I would considered was the acura integra type r ( way too expensive, can you seat 4 like my RS sedan, RS looks way better). The things I am complaining about, are things I do not think should be an issue (alarm setup, brake smell in cabin, hard to find 1st or reverse sometimes, etc.). The other issues are easily resolved; improving suspension, more power, better stoppping, better grip, lighter car, trunk light, etc. Easy, though maybe very expensive. These I knew of before I even considered buying car. The only other car that I wish I had bought instead, isn't here yet, a factory turbo RS. Really wish I could have waited for that one.
And for all the suggested fixes, thx. I will see about them, hopefully I can make my complaints less.
Thx again for the help.

The guys are right about the 1st gear thing. It's supposed to be hard to get into as a safety precaution. The car has more than enough torque to get going while in 2nd, even at like 2-3mph. So next time you find yourself in traffic, just leave it in 2nd unless you come to a stop.

I have to agree with everyone else. The brake smell fads in a month or so. I don't put it into first unless I stop or am almost stopped. And my MY00 doesn't have any squeaks. . . yet.

Maybe I'm in denial because I love my car so much, but who cares.

Cool

2001 Black RS Sedan, 677 miles, I have a little of the brake smell, but it goes right away after I drive a little ways. Thats the only thing I have seen so far. No squeeks, radio must be to loud to hear em.
