Question Extended Warranty - good or not

I guess this would be for the 97 & 98 owners - from your experience, is the extended warranty worth the money? I don't plan on doing any mods, as I want to stay in G-Stock for Solo 2. My wife's Aerostar had the extended and it paid for itself three times over, but with the better quality of the Scooby, I'm hesitant to buy it. Any thoughts?

Hey Mike, I have a MY2000 RS but I got it for peace of mind. I know that Subies are reliable, but I feel better about it.

Yes, the Aerostar had a less than good reliability rating, as did any Ford product with the 3.8l v6 and associated drivetrain. Didn't matter if it was north-south (aerostar, mustang, thunderchicken) or east-west (windstar, taurus) the engines and trannies SUCKED. Back to the main topic...

No Subaru product will ever be that bad, and then only thing that's remotely close is the early SVX transmissions.

But I think the answer lies in the cost. The cheaper you can get the warranty, the better. I was offered a $100k warranty for $1300. Passed without even attempting to negotiate, but then again I won't own this car when the 60k miles comes due.

Nobody even offered it to me, I found out about it weeks after I got mine. As I remember, though, the salesman I was dealing with answered a question for me during the financial signings saying that he offered something and I didn't want it.

Yeah, ColinL is right. They will cut some of the cost of the extended warranty with thinks like AAA membership, Costco Membership, your bank. So ask them if you do get the extended warranty.

Think about the warranty like insurance, only in this case nobody is making you buy it.

It is a cost vs risk calculation.

If you think you may be at risk then does that risk justify the cost now.

If you aren't doing any mods and you drive your car hard and you plan to keep it form 100K miles I feel that the extended warranty is worth it.

BTW, some extended warranties have deductibles which can be bad if only BS things keep breaking. Then you will be paying for all repairs while the warranty just sits there. I don't think they are that comforting because of this fact coupled with the unscrupulous nature of some dealerships, where they deny a problem exists if it's going to cost them up the a$$ for it. It happened with my dad's car, mechanic said rear brake cylinder leaked dealer said it didn't. It turned out that the mechanic was telling the truth. Car was even still under factory warranty so go figure!

My two cents on it.

The Subaru extended warranties are good things (Make sure it is a Subaru warranty.) Not only do they add things like rental car allowance, trip interruption allowance, etc. they are good at ANY Subaru dealership. You can also get them that have $0 deductible. We just had a lady into our shop the other day who was on vacation (We are in NC she was from MI) in a 96 Legacy with 91000 miles. Her AC compressor went out she brought it in left it overnight came back the next day paid $50 (she had the $50 deductible plan)and continued her trip.

They have different mileage/time plans, and also a choice between Classic and Gold.

I got Classic 7 yr./100,000mi. I think.
