Wink N/S Smackdown AutoX accident, my insurance is paying for it!

OK, this is pretty much just a quickie FYI. I'm writing a full article now and will post it once the car is repaired (two or three weeks). As some of you know, my Impreza smacked a fence at the Camden N/S Smackdown AutoX and I came home with the Colin McRae award. Anyway, after four or five calls to my insurance company, they're covering the damages 100%!

Quickie details:
  • Cooked the slalom too hot and spun backwards into a steel railing. Lots of damage to the front end.
  • $500 collision deductable.
  • $2,700 to $3,500 damage estimate.
  • SCCA is paying for the fence.
  • My insurance company is paying for it and is sending an appraiser out tomorrow.
  • My insurance company is cowriting a check made out to both me and the body shop and will work directly with the body shop to hash out a price.
  • I think I've figured out a way to sneak a STi Version V front end into the estimate.

Anyway, yeah. Even though my insurance policy specifically states they will not cover racing or speed events, they're covering damages from the AutoX!

How did you get them to cover it since it is a race? Or do they not classify autoX as a race? And what insurance company would do that? LOL

Cool

According to the SCCA, nowhere does the rulebook classify AutoX as racing. It is a "driver skill and instructional event that simulates normal emergency road conditions." And how did I know you'd be the first to respond?

Ok Keith, then that means you can come out to the autox this weekend... don't worry about paying for it, because if we hit each other, we'll make some money!!!

OK, just got back from the body shop. $4518 total damages. $2542 parts, the rest is labor and paint. Ick. I'll post another quickie after the insurance appraiser looks at the car tomorrow.

Wait, so what exactly did you tell your insurance company? Did you tell them exactly what happened & what you were participating in?

Yes. What a concept. I told them the truth, start to finish. I told them I was participating in an SCCA autocross driver skill and instructional event (by the rulebook, autocrosses aren't races or speed events) and ended up spinning and smacking a fence. The full story is coming soon. The appraiser is coming tomorrow, so I'll find out tomorrow exactly how much of that estimate will be covered.

I'm not that worried about premiums. My wife has had a few claims and is only paying a few dollars more than I am...about $620/year. And the bastard appraiser came out, looked at my car and left without calling me! Didn't even have me come down to lift the hood! Guh. This should make it interesting.

When I called and asked when he'd be showing up he cheerfully told me, "no need to pull you away from your busy work schedule...already looked at it this morning!" Guh. Ohwell, now it's time for the body shop to duke it out with the appraiser on the estimate.

I wouldn't worry too much about the premiums, either. I now have a ticket and two accidents on my record (after 17 years of no accidents, doh!), including a totalled OBS, and my premium only went up a couple hundred a year. Whew.

Insurance companies will eventually pay even for claims resulting from "racing type" events. They have to!! But don't be supprised if you see a big supprise when your renewal notice arrives, if they don't cancel the policy all together.

As "innocent" as the organizers may want their events to appear by calling them "emergency driving skill training" or "country road tour". They are NOT innocent and insurance companies aren't stupid either!!

Good Luck!
