Question McRae to race at Le Mans?

RALLYING: MCRAE'S SET FOR A DEBUT AT LE MANS Mar 26 2004

FORMER world rally champion Colin McRae is set to make his Le Mans 24-Hour Race debut in a Ferrari.

The Scot recently had a secret test in the Prodrive-prepared Ferrari 550Maranello GTS.

McRae, who completed the 7000-mile Dakar Rally for Nissan in January, is ready to sign a deal to racein June's endurance classic with Frederic Dor's Care Racing.

The 35-year-old from Lanark tested the car at Snetterton in Norfolk and an announcement from Care Racing, the outfit which funds and manages the 550 Maranello project, is expected shortly.

McRae said: 'I've always wanted to compete at Le Mans because it is a true driver's race which tests ability to the max 'I've been involved in talks and hopefully I can confirm something soon.

'I've always said Le Mans is one of the great races of the world and it would be a big motorsport challenge for me, especially in the same year that I completed the 7000-mile Dakar Rally.

'I wanted to do a few of these different things this year and this would be an ideal opportunity for me to experience Le Mans. It's one race every driver would love to have a go at.

'To be able to do Le Mans with a Ferrari is just that bit extra and it would be very special.

'I've known Frederic a long time through rallying and, when I found out what he had done with the550s,we just moved it on from there.'

In addition to the Le Mans 24-Hour classic in June, the deal could also see McRae compete in the new European Le Mans Endurance Series which hosts races at the Nurburgring, Spa and Silverstone.

Care Racing's Dominic Falque said: 'It's true to say we have had a number of meetings with both Colin and his manager and what is important is that we are making very good progress.'

McRae has already proven his talents racing on tarmac.

In addition to driving in a round of the British Touring Car Championship at Knockhill in the early 90s, he has test-driven a Jordan F1 car and successfully raced Ascars at Rockingham

For some reason, I really don't like Colin anymore. I can't quite figure out what it is.

Was that ever proven to be the reason why he didn't get into Subaru? I know there was talk about money being an issue, but I never heard a statement from anyone that said something to the effect of "McRae wanted too much money".

I was always under the premonition that McRae wanted way too much money, Subaru said **** off, and then Burns won the WRC. My dates could be off, but that's what my mind remembers from those years. If it's not true, my mind will probably still think that.

Oh, you're talking years ago. I was thinking about the beginning of this season.

Well, actually, I don't know why McRae left then any more than I know why he didn't come back this season. *shrug*
